Hi all, I'm going to be traveling to Peru in November for my TEFL course and I'm a little nervous about the "getting there" part. Many of the flights I've looked at (from the Baltimore/Washington area to Cuzco, Peru) have an 8hour overnight layover. Will I be able to leave the airport and get a hotel room (in either Bogota or Lima)? Is this safe? Would it make things more difficult getting back through security/customs? I'd love to avoid the overnight layover, but that would mean spending nearly double on the flight. Any advice from veteran travelers would be greatly appreciated! |

I'd stay at the airport. Even when I've had 12 plus layovers it often makes more sense. You'll have to wait to get off the plane, go through immigrations, get your luggage, go through customs, find a taxi. All that takes time, unless you find a hotel close to the airport and are willing to pay the high prices. There's left luggage areas, so just pay for that and camp out. It's all part of the adventure
Lima's perfectly safe. Ok, the airport is perfectly safe. They've redone it and there are guards and everything. |

Thanks for all your help. Staying in the airport seems like a safer bet. Any idea if there's a left luggage spot in Bogota? Also, if its considered a connection will I even collect my baggage? |

I don't know abotu COlombia, but I know in the US, even if you have an intl connection you have to take your luggage through security again. Maybe ask when you check in? |

is that overnight layover flight your only option?
i was in peru just this summer, and lima's airport (in terms of lounge areas) wasn't that good. i arrived late at night (~11pm), but luckily had a pick-up and didn't need to stay in the airport.
anyways, if you do choose lima, i'd suggest you don't fall asleep. |

Actually the airport is SO much better than it used to be. I've stayed overnight there, sleeping at the airport back when it was not so nice and recently. You should be fine. Check your luggage or put it in left luggage and it'll be ok. |
