Hi all,
I am conducting this survey to ascertain the living conditions of EFL teachers living in employer-provided housing. I will use these survey results in a proposal that I will present to my university within the next month regarding recreational facilities provided for full-time teachers living on-campus.
Again, thanks very much for your time and your help!

1. Are you a full-time teacher?
Yes
2. If your employer provides you with housing, please answer the following questions:
a. Is the housing furnished?
yes--the standard arrangement seems to be a bed, a couch, a table with a couple of chairs, a smaller corner table, and appliances (stove, fridge, washer/dryer, heater/AC); we all also get a basic supply of dishes, household cleaners, etc.
b. Is the rent paid for by your employer?
yes
c. Do you live in the same complex with other faculty members? If so, is this complex on-campus or within a designated compound for faculty? (Please explain.)
There are two different neighborhoods in which the teachers are housed, both within about a five-minute walk of the school. They are not "complexes," which I take to mean walled-in communities; they are just part of the town.
d. If you answered yes to the above, please indicate what types of recreational facilities are provided to teachers by your employer:
i. common area (for parties, get-togethers, etc.)
ii. kitchen/sink
iii. gym/exercise room
iv. billiard room
v. wet bar
vi. reading room
vii. common television viewing area
viii. meeting rooms
ix. other (please explain)
None--we all have our own houses. There is a small exercise room at the school, though.
e. Do you have easy access to recreational facilities provided? Please explain.
The facilities at school are free. I don't know the hours, and I don't know how many of us use them (I don't).
f. Are these recreational facilities shared with students or other non-teaching personnel?
Yes--since it's a part of the school, not part of our housing, it's open to students (and I assume non-teaching staff) as well.
g. What kinds of activities take place in the recreational facilities? Please provide details.
i. informal meetings
ii. parties/get-togethers/BBQs
iii. classes
iv. exercise sessions
v. television/movie viewing
vi. reading
vii. billiards, chess, etc.
viii. other
h. Have you ever been prevented from using the facilities? If so, why?

Having little else to do with my free time, I've decided to fill out this survey. Yay I love doing these things!

Hello,I'm currently in the Sahara desert teaching for an oil company.Working hours are 7am to 5pm with a 2 hour lunch break in between. The employer gives us shared housing, all bills paid, laundry done and three meals a day.Transport is free as are the gym,the tennis courts, satellite tv and sand golf course.I get sent home for 3 weeks leave every 65 days (tickets paid).Eventually, when I have saved enough to buy my son a flat in which we can live I plan on moving back to Poland. The lack of women and booze will have done for me long before then I fear.By the way,you learn something new everyday;while walking through the desert to the internet cafe (hut) today I saw a hedgehog lying flattened on some tyre tracks...I never knew they lived in the desert...and what's more all that space and they still aim for the cars. The 'Groudhog Day' effect is so strong out here that you notice such trivial things. Please send me a pm if my posts start getting weird as I'll have probably gone mad but won't be in a fit state to recognize the fact. Thanks in advance!! |

You didn't tell us what to do if our employer doesn't provide housing
|
Just as an aside, I get the use of the embassy pool and tennis court as well as a pretty good library I can borrow from at work with all sorts of media. My employer also subsides our rent quite heavily. In fact, they actually pay me to live here it's that heavy! |

1. Are you a full-time teacher? yes
2. If your employer provides you with housing, please answer the following questions:
a. Is the housing furnished? no
b. Is the rent paid for by your employer? The building belongs to teh employer, and so take your pick of rent-free or heavily subsidised; thats a semantic differnec eonly.
c. Do you live in the same complex with other faculty members? If so, is this complex on-campus or within a designated compound for faculty? (Please explain.) Same building as other teachers. It is next to the school compound, but not in it.
d. If you answered yes to the above, please indicate what types of recreational facilities are provided to teachers by your employer:
i. common area (for parties, get-togethers, etc.) no
ii. kitchen/sink yes
iii. gym/exercise room no
iv. billiard room no
v. wet bar haha
vi. reading room no
vii. common television viewing area no
viii. meeting rooms no
ix. other (please explain) Japanese teachers who are seen smoking, either on or off-duty, lose their yearly pay rise and bonuses. Foreign teachers in teh same situation tend not to get renewed contracts.
e. Do you have easy access to recreational facilities provided? Please explain. I have full and free access to my sink.
f. Are these recreational facilities shared with students or other non-teaching personnel? While the foreign teachers at the school are free to participate in school club activities and thus use school sports facilities, none do so regularly, to avoid setting a precedent and getting incorporated into a regular supervision schedule.
g. What kinds of activities take place in the recreational facilities? Please provide details.
i. informal meetings
ii. parties/get-togethers/BBQs
iii. classes
iv. exercise sessions
v. television/movie viewing
vi. reading
vii. billiards, chess, etc.
viii. other
