CELTA, TESOL, TEFL, TESL certs are ALL entry level certs.
DELTA and/or a degree are low-mid level.
B.Ed, PGCE are basic
and a MA / M.Ed is upper level. |
Actually, according to the National Qualifications Framework masters, PCGEs and DELTAs are all level 7 qualifications, with bachelors and ProfCGE at level 6 and CELTAs at level 5. |

Dear I'm with Stupid,
"Actually, according to the National Qualifications Framework, masters, PCGEs and DELTAs are all level 7 qualifications . . . "
But not in the real world of work in most/almost all places.

Yes, but in the real world, a B.Ed or PGCE doesn't qualify you to teach ESL, so to rank them above a DELTA is simply wrong. They're not even the equivalent of a CELTA as evidenced by the number of PGCE qualified teachers who then subsequently have to get a CELTA or equivalent in order to teach. And from what I've read, the DELTA and masters are seen as roughly equivalent, with some employers preferring one and some preferring the other. In terms of ESL, this would be my ranking:
Any old BA
B.Ed/BA English, linguistics, etc
PGCE
CELTA
DELTA/Masters
Masters are an odd one though, because I've seen masters in TESOL that you can do straight after graduating, and masters that have the same entry requirements as the DELTA. |
