My partner and I are about to take the plunge to come to Istanbul and had a few questions related to Residence Permits and Employment that we are hoping some of the more experienced folk on this board can answer.

We are wondering how difficult it is to renew a Residence Permit. We are planning on doing the CELTA in Istanbul and were thinking about getting a six months permit to allow us adequate time to hunt down job opportunities, so we don't have to convert a bunch of money into lira and then down the road have to convert it right back to remit it.

Is it easy to extend a six month permit?

We were also wondering if you think the residence permit duration would have any impact on a prospective employers hiring decision. Is a longer duration one better?

And on a slightly unrelated note, would a rental agreement for a room be sufficient or do the authorities want individuals to be renting an entire flat?

Thanks all!

Re: longer/better

The school Im currently working for pays teachers residency visa fee up front but requires teachers work for them for the extent of that visa. If a teacher terminates employment before the visa expires, half the cost of the visa is withheld from the teachers final months pay.

Fair enough, as far as Im concerned.

That seems exceedingly fair. Thanks for sharing!
