Hi everyone. I've been doing some research latelty trying to figure out where i can and can't go, and it seems like Japan could be a possibility. However there are some concerns i have regarding the nuclear power plant meltdown in Fukushima as a result of the tsunami earlier this year. Basically what i'm asking is, is it safe to live in Japan at this time? are some areas better than others? should i be concerned?

any input would be greatly appreciated!

Safety is relative. Japan also experiences frequent earthquakes and annual typhoons. You won't be able to avoid them very easily. As for radiation, I'd say that if you aren't posted around the Fukushima area where the damaged reactors are, you'll be as safe as the rest of us.

Yes, of course, people should be "concerned", but the best you can really do about natural disasters is learn what is needed to prepare for them. Register with the nearest embassy/consulate so that they have a listing of you and your fellow countrymen in case of emergency and need to tally a list of them or be a contact point for friends and relatives.

It depends. Was it safe to live in St Louis after the Three Mile Island melt down? Warsaw after Chernobyl? "Japan" covers a large area. Living in the small area affected would be bad. But that's a small part of Japan.

I actually had someone at the office ask me if I felt OK because they'd heard I'd been to Japan a few weeks ago. I told them that I felt quite ill after visiting Osaka, but that that reaction was typical for me. Smile They actually thought I was talking about The Radiations! Rolling Eyes

Stay away! All of Japan is a post-apoalyptic radioactive hellhole. You really wouldn't like it. Oh, and if you do happen to come, please don't apply for any jobs, especially not in the vicinity of Narita, Chiba. If you do, a curse will fall on you and your whole family. (Not that there are any jobs, anyhow. Nobody has time for English lessons, what with all the starvation and mutant zombie hordes and all that.)

Go somewhere nice and safe like ... I dunno' ... China instead.

Did it work?

You'll find plenty of zombies in Japanese classrooms. Do you have the retrovirus? We might just be able to save some of them...

I don't think the fallout from the nuclear radiation was an illusion:.

if you felt ill after it happened, it was probably real. Not just your imagination.

Laughing

We had newbies fly into and train in Osaka in March, literally just after the "end of the Japan" (training was supposed to be in Tokyo but it was changed just to be safe) and I can assure you there was no complaints about radiation sickness, zombies, lickers or anyone developing crazy mutant powers.

I wish some of my juvenile deliquents would turn into zombies. They might be a little quieter and less enegetic that way. I got dragged and shoved out of school and to the station on Thursday afternoon by some 17/18 year old boys; two pulling my hands and one pushing me in the back, much to the amusement of the OAPs and the bewilderment of two cute hens that frequent that street.

I live in northern Tochigi prefecture, and all is well here. I believe I'm about 70km from the power plant.

However, the risk of dying from boredom is a real threat.

See: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/radiation-levels.html?date=20111219

No worries... from this daily data you can see in tokyo an other areas away from the nuclear accident that hourly radiation levels are within normal levels. you wouldn't be exposed to anymore radiation than someone living in a big city in a America in a given year if you settled in Tokyo or Chiba...

A projection? With no scale of level? How..... utterly utterly useless. Evil or Very Mad

If you felt ill afterwards and you weren't in line of sight of the reactors themselves then it was more likely to have been last nights curry than it was Teh Radiationz. But keep on scaremongering, champ! Rolling Eyes

Down here in Kansai, I feel completely uneffected.

In short, Japan is a big country, so I wouldn't personally want to live in Fukushima by any means, and since I'm not in Tokyo anyways, I have no desire to move to Tokyo. (I like Kansai anyways, so probably wouldn't move there even if there wasn't Fukushima to the north of it).

But since I'm all the way down in Kansai, I feel far enough removed. Some concern with foods, but not a major concern. Not something I ever think about, unless I read an exploitation piece in the western media.

Any plans on building a new electric plant? It's going to be summer again this year, you know. An electric plant does take a few years to get online. Wish they'd have started one early last summer.
