This is part of the current ad for the school on the recruiters website :

"Workload:■ 20 class hours per week (45 minutes per class hour)
Monthly Salary: ■RMB 7,200~7,500~7,700
(covering basic salary RMB4,500~4,800~5,000, house rent allowance RMB 2,000, residential allowance RMB 500, insurance allowance and clinic allowance RMB 200). During the months of July and August of 2012 there will be no salary given as there is no work at this time but free accommodation will be provided during these months by the BPO school.
Airfare:Reimburse RMB5000 yuan on the completion of one-academic-year contract. Reimburse RMB2500 on the completion of half-a-year contract. "

Advertising a salary of 7,200 to 7,700, but 2,000 of that salary is the "house rent allowance". They neglect to tell you that there is no house. Your only option is a room in the first floor of the students dormitory , and the sitting room and kitchen is shared.
"Residential allowance 500 RMB" is your utilities.

That airfare won't even get you to most other Asian cities. So 200 RMB for insurance and clinic? Pray you don't get sick. No pay for July and August? does the contract (as most) forbid outside work? 2,000 for a dorm-room? jeez...

Recruiters are being restircted on the number of Z visas being issued. So they arrange alliances amonst themselves with promissing teachers and agencies that can get these docoments. Anyonei in China knows this.
Jobs in the world today, jobs are bought not earned. Wage slaves as CMM once said on this column.

I agree with the OP. People new to China, unless thay have worked with sociopaths in either prison or mental hospitals, can not really conceive of what many Chinese employers/ administrators are capable.

There is a learning curve for everyone here. I have heard of very sophisticaed people from the West getting suckered and swindled in the FT business. If it happens to them, it can happen to any of us.

I'm getting the distinct impression that these boards are being taken over by Chinese English learners and apologists whose perspective reflects their own animal like social consciousness. It's unfortunate. Just another sign of the degradation of English teaching in China.

Oral English is a waste for time for most Chinese students. The hospitality industry is one area where it is not a waste of time at all. It should be a requirement for guides, and other people in the service industry, whose businesses cater to foreigners. Yet I'm not surprised that this school alienates its employees and is developing a bad reputation.

Fact is, the Chinese really don't want foreigners of any kind in China. All they want is the money.

I'm sure it's a 'fact', and I'm sure you can prove it.

Lobster,

The expression "fact is" is a rhetorical device for the purpose of emphasis, not unlike an exclamation point. I might have used other expressions such as "in fact" or "really." Rhetorical devices serve various functions in writing. In fact, they are not intended to be interpreted in a slavishly literal fashion.

I don't agree with either statement. That's a fact.

This is truly a fact.

Good luck OP. No sense sticking with a school like that. Sure there are plenty of schools with bad conditions, but the deceitfulness of the salary and lack of real housing means they won't likely treat you any better in the future than they are absolutely forced to. Or maybe it's a problem with the recruiter. Either case, it's the schools responsibility to provide their end of the bargain and your right to leave if they don't. If that breaks the contract, let them sue you. Sorry you had bad luck. There are good schools out there.

There is this false idea that Z visas are easy to acqire in ones home country. I have been here many years and the only time this was possible was during the 2008 Olympics when foreignerw were sent home to get the visa. Hong Kong was closed.

They aren't easy unless you are qualified. You are more likely to be able to get a z-visa from your home country than from Hong Kong. I've gotten z-visas from my home country more than once.

What situation ? Same school or same recruiter ?
I have already left the Nanjing school so I am no longer dealing with this school or recruiter.

A 'bad teacher' could have any number of meanings. It could mean that you don't want to put up with the abuse. Perhaps it means you complain too much when they break the contract. Maybe you see some things unfair and open your mouth about it. Or it could be that they found a foreigner who will work for less than you.

Whatever it is, the school is obviously to be avoided.
