Some things cost more outside Istanbul.

All my care was delivered at a government hospital in Bursa, but the fees were much, much higher.

Anyway, the thought here is that if you come to Turkey, figure in 1,000 for emergency, just to be on the safe side.

And then figure on the amount you need to keep aside for the residence permit.

A couple of more questions.

How much should we put aside for work permits ?

Are the residency permits cheap ?

Thanks.

The fee depends on your home country. An amount to prove financial stability for each month you claim you will be here is needed to show either by a bank slip or a currency exchange receipt. Once you produce that receipt to the police and file your request for a residence permit, then you are free to spend your money as you wish.

This discussion came up in October. Check residency permit topics back then and you'll get the long and short of it.

That's a good budget, especially for Izmir. Keep in mind that Izmir is a lot easier to live in for a beginner and it's cheaper. You can find a decent place to rent in Izmir for about 700TL, in Istanbul it is almost impossible to find as nice for the same price.

Could you please elaborate on why Izmir is a lot easier to live in? I know Istanbul is much bigger, but I'd assumed that more resources were available because of that.

Ive been watching this thread with some linguistic interest for a week or so now.

Maybe its a British/American English thing, but I cant tell if the OP is talking about supporting a pet monkey or a family of six, (till jobs are found, and, How much should we be looking at?), but you all seem to know exactly what (s)he means . . . /scratch

I think it is a couple who are coming from Africa and looking for TEFL positions in Istanbul.

@gursky- I'm going to say that Istanbul is easier than Izmir. Istanbul is cosmopolitan. Izmir isn't, although plenty of Turks will tell you it is. Costs are cheaper in Izmir and it's easy to get around the city, but Istanbul is much more suitable IMO for someone coming to Turkey for the first time. Acclimating to a new environment and culture isn't easy and in Istanbul I find people are more open-minded and friendlier.

I agree with Lucia.

Istanbul is fast paced and a little pricey, but it is welcoming to diversity, to tourists, and to all nationals.

I loved it and think that if you avoid over-spending on gifts and trinkets, your budget is just fine until you get a job. In Istanbul, you can find yourself employed in less than a week.

Hi,

Yes we are a couple planning to move from Africa.

We thought we were sorted about where we are going, now not to sure since Instanbul is now sounding good. Confused

Thanks for all your input again.

Dear Smaug,

Instead of trying to be clever, why don't you learn how to use all the features that come with this forum!!!

If you click on the user name of any said member, it allows you the ability to see all former post by any said user.

It took me no more than 2 minutes to find the below information.

So yes, it has got to be a 'British thing'.

Scratching head Wink

First, I can't help being clever. It's a curse.

Second, I find it impossible to believe your Queen Mum would approve of her royal subjects absolving themselves of the responsibility to write clearly and concisely, regardless of how little time a reader is required to spend looking elsewhere for pertinent information. (Indeed . . .)

But perhaps you're right.

Perhaps, rather than being annoyed at contributors who'll blithely dash off a phrase like, "Can someone please tell me where I can find an acceptable position?" (As opposed to all those unacceptable positions, I suppose), I should just spend a few minutes searching their profile pages and looking through their previous posts for clues. o.O

There's nothing wrong with using till. A person can use till and/or until. Both are acceptable. Smile Till is older, but is used by Britons and Americans.

And you said it yourself Smaug; only you seemed to not know what was meant, everyone else knew. Wink

It's the passive voice ('til jobs are found) not the contraction. Found by whom, you see, an organ grinder and his monkey, a family of acrobats . . . ?

And, yes, I'm the only one who didn't know. But how did you all know? That is my question.

Till is actually not a contraction of until. Anyways, it's implied that it is they who are looking for jobs. And they want to know if 10,000 TL will be enough to live on untill (or till) they find jobs. That's how I understood it.
