|

I'm 51 with a non-English B.A. and CELTA, plus a year and a half teaching in China.
I am considering taking the leap and going to Turkey after opting not to last year. What I gather from reading the forum is (1) Istanbul has a higher cost of living but is easier to live in and has more job opportunities (2) language schools are the best bet for quick employment (3) temporary lodging is generally not cheap, but there are affordable hostels to be found.
So what I'm wondering is: (1) Would the beginning of March be a good time to come to Turkey? That is, could I land a tolerable job within a few weeks? (2) Is it feasible for a single person to have their own place without spending their entire salary on rent? I don't relish having roommates. (3) In Turkey, is ageism a significant factor in hiring?
Thanks for any input. |

Aristede,
It seems like people can find jobs at any time in Istanbul. I know some and of some 50 year olds teaching, so I think you'll be okay. If you really look you can find an apt. at a good renting price. I had a nice apt., roomate-free for 700 TL per month, but that was a few years ago. Rents probably have gone up a little, but I'm sure with a little hard work you can find something nice and under 1000 TL. |

Thank you lucia and istanbulian for your encouraging advice. I am eager for a change from China. Turkey may not necessarily be easier to live in, but I'm sure it will be different. And I know I would like the food more. |
