I am looking into teaching abroad and would like some suggestions and information. I have a BA in English Lit and a MA in English. I worked for four semesters as the GTA of my department. Three of which I tutored international students (mainly Chinese and some SA); the other semester was research based. I plan on getting my CELTA in Jan in Denver. What do you experienced people think I could expect for job offers in Indo? I have read many of your posts, and while some of the posters seem quite rude (maybe because they are scared of people with actual degrees?) I think that this seems like a wonderful place to live and work. So, I suppose I am looking for:

1) where should I start applying at? Please don't just use abbreviations, because I am not sure what they all mean. Links would be very helpful!

2) what kind of pay can I expect?

3) what are the best cities to work in and why? (I'm not looking to be a tourist!)

4) what kind of Internet can I expect?

5) are there any other countries that I should look into with my specific qualifications?

If I think of anything else, I will post it here. And please, if you are one of those vile people who need to post hateful messages because of your own short comings, SAVE YOUR ENERGY!

PS: wrote this on phone, so save your "grammar" lesson for someone else.

With your qualifications you should easily be able to get a job as a TEFL teacher.

A franchise of schools to try that have branches all over are The British Institute (TBI). Their website is tbi.co.id. Also try looking at Wall street Institute as they have a good rep however I think they only have branches in Jakarta. http://www.wallstreet.ac.id/ . I think in another recent post someone posted a better link to them for perspective teachers.
Avoid EF (English First) with your qualifications you can do much better. There are lots of other schools but all will depend on where you want to go. Have a look on living in Indonesia forum there is a thread there about available jobs in Indonesia at the moment.

Places to live very much depend on what you like/want to do at the weekends. I very much enjoyed living in Medan as there were lots of places I could easily escape to at the weekend as I'm very much into the outdoors. Also they have great food there. Also I love the people in Sumatra they are much more direct than the Javanese.

I'm now in Jakarta which is not my cup of tea at all. While I enjoy being being able to get all my home comforts if I wish and having lots of entertainment on tap the traffic can make it unbearable. I'm not really a city girl and dislike being stuck in the city/another mall at the weekend. It takes so long to get in and out of Jakarta it discourages some to attempt leaving for a weekend away. I've now joined the Hash House Harriers so I am now at least getting out to run through the countryside and jungle at the weekends Smile

Salary will really depend on where you end up. You should be able to get 10million upwards.

Good luck with the job hunt and hope you enjoy Indonesia as much as some of us have over the years Smile

Instead of working in a language school, you might like to consider the relative pros & cons of working in a private high school. As with language schools, pay and conditions can vary considerably, but in a high school you could teach a course more appropriate to your degree in English Lit. Alternatively, with an MA you just might be able to wangle a University position...
With your qualifications I'd expect no less than IR16m, although there's probably a bit of wiggle room on that one.
You could try Bali, but expect lower pay. I'd suggest Surabaya. No beaches to speak of, but easy to get to Bali and those beautiful islands East of Bali.
The downside of working outside of Jakarta is that the pay is usually less.
Indonesia has some of the greatest surf, snorkeling/scuba and low cost holiday destinations in the world.
Just start googling![/i]

If you're not into beaches, I have friends who work in Bandung who love it. It's an area with mountains so cooler than most of Indo.

I know there's two TBI's (The British Institute), but don't know what else.

Remember that your salary is relative to the cost of living in the area where you live. 16m might sound like a lot, but not if you live in Jakarta.

And some other posters talked about living like a 'native' (lots of rice, no alcohol and very few trips) or liviing like a westerner (satellite TV, internet, restaurants, etc.).

As an example, I live/work in Surabaya, live a western lifestyle with my wife and daughter on 15m month. Vacations are extra and I use non-salary money to fund those activities.

Think what kind of speeds and connection quality you were getting back home in 1998 or so. On par with that. Even the big cities tend to be atrocious. And expensive. 100 bucks a month for a snail speed connection isn't unheard of. There are rumors of people who are able to get decent download quality, but like leprechauns and fairies it always seems to have been a friend of a friend of a friend who experienced it.

Manado is a nice place to live. Beautiful city, less traffic, right on the beach, some stunning diving and snorkelling just off the coast, volcanoes, great food, friendly people, and as a predominantly christian area it avoids some of the hang ups and issues that are becoming an issue down south...easier access to alcohol, more relaxed dress code, no 4.30am wake up calls from the mosque.
Not sure about your relationship status, but along with Bandung it has a reputation for having the most beautiful women in the country.

Downsides are it's a little isolated. 3+ hours flight from Jakarta and there are only a handful of schools that may be worth applying to with your qualifications. Manado International School, perhaps a couple of universities....
