When I filled in my non-res form, I called and spoke with someone about their guidlines, since one question was "Will you have a passport?" Well, DUH!!! I am still a Canadian Citizen. OI!
Biggest things to prevent non-res status being granted:
Kids/spouse in Canada
Property in Canada
Easily liquidatable assests in Canada.
When I left, I had a bank account to repay Student Loans, a car (which was for sale), a License (since expired) and a dog (since give to a farm). They asked if I would renew the licence and close the account once the loan was paid off, to which I said yes.
I was granted Non-res status with no problem.
>>Jen, if you are leaving for another NON-Canada country, you should be ok. Get the form, apply for non-res status. I left Japan after 24 months and moved to Hong Kong. No problems with the Gov't. *yet* (fingers crossed) |

The first I don't have. Could still easily become a non-resident. Famillies do get seperated.
The 2nd and 3rd I do have but they have not prevented me from becoming a "non-resident" for tax purposes.

Defnitely wouldn't fess up to renewing your license but a bank account?
How are you suposed to look after your Canada affairs/assests wihtout a bank account?
You can get around that too!
Essentially, the canadian government wants you to invest in Canada. If their polices were inflexible as some people would like you to believe there would be a mass exodus of capital flight from Canada.
Already offshore asests are depriving the GOV of Canada of a lot of possible tax revenue. There's a lot of hand wringing in Ottawa about how to coax investment back.
If they close some doors others will open. They need to be flexible.
Heck all of the advice I've posted was from Revenue Canada. The last thing they want me to do is park my cash in the Grand Cayman Islands. |

Canuck, exactly how many ties did you have to sever? Are there guidelines for this? I still have a canadian credit card and bank account, as well as drivers licence |
I was told the magic number of 6. A passport is one, and the fact you want to renew it is another tie. Doesn't make sense. A bank account is one. Property is another. A bank account is. Another bank account with a different bank is. A credit card is. Another credit card is. Health care is. A driver's license is. A RRSP is. Owning something there is. Sever and get rid of the ties. I have 4, a bank account, a passport and a credit card.
Student loans are not.
Phone them. |

Thanks for all your (conflicting) advice.
Yes, I have talked to government offices.
I`m basically going to try my luck. Not file for at least 2 years, have my earnings sent to a family members bank acct, and then declare non-res for tax purposes. I`ve got very few ties - I believe under 6.
Thanks again for all your help.

Keep them in your own bank account make sure it's hooked up online. |
