Racism regarding the colour of the skin is a fact throughout Asia. Some are more blantant than others.
I once observed a Philipina teacher during my first year in Vietnam. She was one of the best teachers I have ever seen to this day. Her use of lexical methodology was solid, clear and effective. She was a teacher's teacher in every sense.
I shortly learned I was hired to replace her. I was even more dumbfounded to learn that she had a PhD. in chemistry and had taught primary school for over 20 years. I stupidly asked the management why she was being replaced and they said because she was Pilipino -honest to god!
I was ashamed and left that school shortly thereafter.
I have met a hand fold of black/Indian teachers in Asia and the responses from students regarding these teachers is sadly and predictably the same. I can only conclude that they are programmed at an early age. Appearance supersedes quality in many aspects in South East Asia. |

That's why it's worth it to buy decent clothes and groom well. I've seen teacher's, that were not backpackers, wear sandals to school, but not just sandals, NASTY sandals! The smell of his feet filled the teacher's room every time he walked in.
I've let management decisons drive me out the door at more than one school,at one they hired me to repalce another teacher. That didn't surprise me. I'd already replaced 2 part time teacher at my second school, but I never saw them. This school called me in for a demo and had me do it during another teacher's scheduled class. I kept looking at him and thinking "Do you know what's going on here you poor *beep*?" Well they hired me and didn't fire him, because another teacher had given notice for the final time and was blazing out the door. They waited until stinky feet walked through the door, hired him, and told the other teacher to stay for a month and collect his salary. I ended up leaving first, for a lot of reasons, including that move. It was actually a stupid thing to do. Your case is certainly justifiable.
I know the Vietnamese have to scratch their heads and wonder why we do things like we do, just like the way we wonder about their idiosyncrasies. |

For all those that need a reality check (yeah, that's you) this is firm and reliable advice. I've written this same advice myself, only used different sentences and words!  |

Maybe I do need a reality check! The differences between management and I became a strain that was more than I could bear, so I resigned.
THERE"S NO WORK IN HANOI, UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!
Just kidding! I'm back in Saigon, looking for a job just before the Tet holiday. Fun!
Here's a reality check, for anyone who wants, or needs one. This guy has had a really hard time! The last school threatened to have him deported and another tried to extort him!

Looks like he didn't ever come to understand the mindset of the VN "Xao".
In the beginning you'll become bitter and rebellious of this distinct difference between our cultures but at some point, you should begin to realize that this is just business as usual for the vast majority of VN businesses. So at least, he needs to adapt the "When in Rome..."attitude OR run from SE Asia.
Personally, I have invested a lot more in VN Language study, VN etiquette, and friendships & alliances with high placed VN. If you want to threaten or hurt me, you'll have to affect my family and friends so that it becomes an "us or them" battle NOT JUST ME! But in all fairness, I'm here long term - almost 9 yrs already. |

Add being able to speak Vietnamese, at least at a conversational level, to the long term survival strategy. At least living in Hanoi would mean that the Pimsleur program would be useful, since it's taught with the northern dialect. All the other's are too, unless I'm mistaken. |
