| It might sound like volunteer work, but if you browse the jobs here on this very site and you will see that many university positions in China offer 4500 to 5000 as the standard rate. It doesn't matter if you think they should get paid more, because that is what the market is offering. I also have seen a few ads offering "internship" positions, which I think is quite shocking. It seems that teaching English in China is really becoming volunteer work. |

No. Somebody is getting paid, just not the teachers. While there are some honest volunteer and internship programs, more than likely it's a way around the Z visa legalities and/or increasing income. Just not your income.
...and yes, it does matter if you think you should be paid more. It's not difficult to find a job paying more nor is it unreasonable to negotiate. I think you'll find the majority of low paying jobs are offered through recruiters. Recruiters who will often earn more the less they pay you. |

We need to reverse this trend; get the recruiters working for us and have them paid more when we are paid more. |

People seem to be commenting on everything but the OP's question.
First off 5000 IS the norm for uni positions. Now back to the question...
I lived in Chengde last year. It's not a bad city, all do when I say city I really mean town. If your looking for night life/clubs etc this is not the place for you. Having said that it's not a bad place to get used to China if its your first job here. People are very friendly and the food is amazing. It's actually what I miss most from Chengde.
