He did not make 10,000 per month. For what it's worth, Tsinghua pays 50,000 to 66,000 RMB per annum; about the same as most other universities in China. If he were careful with his money he might save enough for interesting travel, or not.

Interesting requirements ...

But I agree, to the extent of my limited knowledge, that teaching anything somewhere is much better than stocking shelves on the graveyard shift.

In Beijing, it must take a lot of effort (drinking boilded tap water, eating instant noodles etc) to save on such income. Then, traveling on holidays such as a Spring Festival takes a bit of such savings too.

Well with all due respect, I guess pensions are pretty much going the way of the dodo bird in America, too. GM and other large companies can't always fund them as they're supposed to.

The 401K and matching funds concept replaced the pension plan model in the U.S. in the '80's. I'd be surprised if any large companies still offer pensions. Pensions are too much of a crap shoot in bad economies.

I'd be interested to know how many of the Fortune 500 companies still offer pensions.

What you meant to say is that companies sold the pension plans to 401K "investment" bankers in the 80's.

Yea but someone like the writer who graduated from Columbia University is not going to be stocking shelves on the night shift for very long.

So what are you suggesting? That we westerners force our children to study well at school, get good jobs, and then demand that they look after us in old age? Is this the answer to the problem?
