I've been here a few months and I've noticed a few of the Czech teachers using what looks to me a very flamboyant cursive writing style. Often with strokes missing on letters such as f and t.
I find some of it very difficult to read.
Anybody know the whys and wherefores of this |

European styles of handwriting have evolved differently - including in recent years. Cursive as used in the UK has changed immeasurably and has been haveiy influenced by Italic and other "innovations".
Reformed cursive, replacing Sutterlin, was only introduced in the German-using world in 1941. The Czech Lands of course were never Prussian but I am sure there were similar developments in the Dual Monarchy of k u k Oesterreich-Ungarn
I suspect that there have been many changes in the Slavonic world too.
Does the script you refer to look like the examples here -

It does look like some of the examples there, very interesting. Thanks!
The students don't seem to have a problem recognising either style, from what I can tell anyway. |

Teachers will have been taught to use what is known as krasopis. However, they introduced a controversial new script called Comenia script a couple of years back, which is similar to the old one but is not joined up. If you click on the galerie on this site, you will see some examples. http://zpravy.aktualne.cz/domaci/skola-zavedla-pismo-comenia-script-rodice-zvazuji-zaloby/r~0cf5a98c842611e49bec0025900fea04/ It is controversial because it is not joined up and debates have raged about the pros and cons of joined up/non-joined up writing. The consequence is that not many schools have adopted the script but you might see it in the future coming through the schools. |
