I want to write this as a warning for anybody thinking of applying to work at the English ESOL Centre (part of Cambridge College) in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
I accepted a position to work here at the start of the year and thought it was a good deal as I was offered a higher than average salary for Bolivia.
These are some of the problems myself and other staff encountered whilst working at the school:
Always paid late in cash sometimes TWO WEEKS LATE
'Surprise' disruptive visits from the Acadmic Director when you are teaching a lesson to check that you have your lesson plan on the desk.
Unfriendly work atmosphere, some staff who were of a different religion (not Christian) or weren't white were faced with obvious discrimination
Promised healthcare plan was not awarded.
Inflexible and bullying management
No teacher area and only one computer for all the staff.
Lots of admin work to do on that one computer such as print and submit lesson plans, write reports and submit exam grades etc
Advertised 'extensive' teacher library was one tiny cupboard with about 10 photocopied dated esl books.
Despite this the students were some of the best students that I have ever taught and Bolivia is an interesting country to explore.
Please contact me if you want any further information or elaboration on the above. |
