False dogma.
Care to identify specific embassies and consulates? |

Dear wantok.
Theory and practice - when you're in Saudi, you either play by their rules or you take you ball and go home.
And DO NOT EXPECT ANY help from your embassy. That's reality.
Regards,
John. |
Unfortunately, some people will never 'get' this 'subtle' reality...instead they are shouting, demanding I know my rights!!! It says so right on my passport That always goes over really well and a great beginning for any (decent)work situation in KSA. If holding on to your passport is very important to you, then best make this issue very clear during the early stages of your job application to avoid any misunderstanding later on once you are in country or if you feel it's a big deal handing over your passport in exchange for the Igama maybe best not to come to KSA.
Again, I have never had any problems with any of the Saudi employers holding on to my passport, nor have I had any issues that required assistance from my Embassy out side of renewing my passport.

Dear wantok,
No dogma - false or otherwise. Just my personal experiences.
I spent over 20 years in EFL. My embassy (USA) was never helpful, either in my experience or in the experience of anyone else that I knew who tried to get assistance.
I cannot, of course, speak for every embassy/consulate, but I also had a lot of British colleagues who had similar experiences with their embassies.
Regards,
John |

I am no longer in Saudi Arabia, true. Do you still reside in the KSA, scot47? |

I retired. I spent in all 17 years working in KSA - and I soon learned that "I am a Westerner and I know my rfights !" is not the best way to proceed - in KSA or anywhere else on Planet Terra. |

I learned that, as a US citizen and having received said passport, I value freedom of movement much more than I value an ideology/religion that is not mine own, and, as such, bristle at the thought of relinquishing the passport that was granted to me for some vague promise that, "Oh, don't worry, we'll give it back to you if you request it" (which IGIT refused to do and, in the end, lied about).
So, yeah, the KSA is not a great place for me to be. Selah. |
