Does anyone know any good sites for finding apartment prices in Netherlands?

I'm looking to make the move there. Is there a cheaper part of Amsterdam I could check into? I keep hearing its very expensive. What isn't anymore right? How far outside Amsterdam would I need to go in order for rent to drop a bit?

I worked in the Netherlands for some years, though not Amsterdam...in my experience, rents can vary hugely dependent upon what you are willing to put up with, basically. Shared flat can be fairly reasonable - maybe 2-300 monthly, but roommates....well, could be great. Shocked
Student flats are obviously on the cheap side, but again, be wary of conditions and check things out carefully, particularly if you value the ability to get a full night's sleep. It's rare to find anything furnished, and likely you will have to even provide your own basic appliances. I never found anything small and quiet, even totally unfurnished, for under about 700 euro/monthly.

The teaching market isn't exactly wide-open in the Netherlands, either. I'm assuming you have the 'right' passport and won't have visa issues as well...

I won't be teaching in Europe at all. 100% my on-line thing which is partly teaching. The other stuff I do I'm sure would bore people to death. But, its all on-line with income coming from other countries. Within 12 months the Netherlands is my target.

Please I'm curious, do people live together a great deal? And if they do live together often is there a on-line source where they find each other? Or a newspaper? I love to read up on things and get good resources if I can.

That's cool, but you still have to have a legal right to live in the country. Assuming you are from an EU member country, no problem. If not, it won't work. Netherlands and surrounding countries are quite strict about this.

Yeah, people tend to room together fairly often, if their income level doesn't allow for independent living.

Thank you for the newspaper link. I was looking for resources similar if possible for Netherlands.

I totally forgot about craigslist for housing. So, there is that:
http://holland.craigslist.org/apa/

I could not find any other sites for Netherlands so called cheap housing. Or, maybe apartment sharing. Maybe theres not a paper with info like that, I don't know.

This was an interesting article on rent:
http://www.expatica.com/nl/housing/renting/Fair-rent-for-all-in-the-Netherlands_15396.html

I also recently came across these clubs for women which may help fit into the community and hopefully help connect with people for housing, roommates, etc. It was such a great list I had to add it:

That is the Dutch for you. Very precise and systematic. At least American passport holders do not need to apply for a tourist visa too. The issuing authorities there, and in Germany, usually count the exact number of days of one's planned visit and issue a Schengen for that time-frame. Not an hour more.

Total contrast to Spain and Italy where everyone seems to get three or six-monthers regardless.

No more 6-monthers for non-EU citizens in Spain or Italy. Sure, the border control guys are a bit more relaxed, but they DO catch at least some of the overstayers these days. And apply consequences.

Hmmm. Not sure about that. The other half got a 12-monther for Spain recently. Not the first visa, though.

Re housing and rent in the Netherlands.

I lived there for a while and because I didn't have a permanent work contract, I couldn't find many places that would rent to me (no "stable" income, you see). My choice was limited to one doggy flat after another... This wasn't Amsterdam, btw, but I can't imagine you'll be any better off there.

When I say "doggy" flat, I mean no central heating (gas fires), peeling plasterwork, faulty wiring... In my flat there was no sink in the bathroom (tho one was installed, just not plumbed in), a boiler that had to be replaced, and lino in one of the rooms, that when taken up, had been lined by newspaper from the 1940s... The balcony was condemned by a housing official, and there were regular fights outside in the street. It was by far the worst place I have ever lived in my life.

If I were you, I'd find a room in someone else's nice flat rather than try and find one on your own.

Well jeeeezze...

I appreciate your comment. I've never heard of living conditions like that before. I'm not saying it can't happen, I just haven't heard of housing like that. I think most of the people I knew that stayed in Amsterdam lived in upper class conditions. But, to be honest I always find it more interesting to know how the real people live.
