I am surprised that no one has started a thread like this.

Please feel free to share your recommendations of canned / bottled beers as well as pubs that have good craft / micro brew beers.

One micro brew canned beer that I like very much is Yona Yona ale (can is yellow and black with a yellow sun on it). It's a well-rounded tasting ale. https://www.flickr.com/photos/maynard/1395410454/

7/11 is now selling an exclusive high malt beer made by Suntory. I tried that over the weekend and like it very much. Comes in a black & gold can.

The idea for this thread came today while I was riding the train and wondering what the ad for happshu with 70% OFF mean? Maybe it was Kirin. I suppose that is just fewer calories, isn't it? The alcohol is still there, isn't it? Has anybody tried this product? I don't imagine that it tastes anywhere as good as real beer.

There is something in beer that is supposedly bad for arthritis. Is the beer in a green label? If so, I think this type has less of the arthritis problem inducing agent. Tastes like crap, though.

On special occasions, I get Suntory's The Premium Malts. It's good, but too pricey for everyday fare. Usually, it's a jug of shochu over ice, sometimes with soda water when I'm lucky, or a twist of lemon if I'm feeling adventurous. I'm a bit of a cheapskate, though. A four liter jug of shochu can last me a month. A six pack of beer is lucky to last a day. Guess its easy to tell which I genuinely prefer to drink

Maitoshi. I know very little about sochu. How much is a bottle? What's the alcohol level?

The 4 liter jugs I buy are 25% and cost about 1800¥.

I wish I were in Japan, but the Sapporo which comes in the tapered silver can is really nice. For some reason, I feel it tastes better than the one in the bottle.

The Sapporo White Belg is pretty good for a cheap, summer combini-beer. Been nice to see a few craft-beer places opening up too. Sadly, my budget does not allow for a thorough survey.

When I really feel like splashing out, I buy a can of Premium Malts or Yebisu, then sit outside the conbini like a fookin' boss!

That would be 70% off for purin. As you get older it helps, since drinking too much real beer can lead to gout.
You mean the Kirin green can, right?

White Belg is like a poor man`s Heineken, but my wife likes it.

I prefer the different Yebisu`s, like the red one, and there is the blue one.

I can't drink alcohol now, but about a year ago me and my wife did some blind taste tests of cheap brands of beer and happoushu.

Our results were as follows:

1. On a yen-for-yen basis, happoushu tastes better than beer.

I.e. if you buy a 200 yen can of beer and a 200 yen can of happoushu, the happoushu will taste better. Buying real beer only makes sense when you're above the happoushu price range.

2. When you buy happoushu you get exactly what it says on the can, and nothing else.

If it says "dry", the only thing you'll be able to taste is "dry". In our opinion, only the "rich malt" flavors were at all beer-like or palatable.

3. Nothing rivals the flavor of a high quality European beer.

And nothing rivals the price, either.

I see little difference in the Japanese lagers.

My wife prefers Kirin, so that's what I usually buy.

Sometimes I have been picking up some dark Asahi. Couldn't taste much difference from the pricier dark Sapparo.

IMO, happoshu tastes poor, so I don't drink it.

Me too. I just work 3 days a week.
The new Yebisu is 265 which is a lot. Can't drink that much.

Yup, I bought it back in March in Sakai.
It is expensive though. I heard it is good on tap in Osaka.
