I did it! I finally broke out of teaching! Today, I got the contracts signed and submitted my resignation notice to the Board of Education.

Starting on August 18th, I'll be developing iPhone software at a brand new startup. The project will start with a language exchange chat app, but who knows where it will end up?

I've spent far too much time on this forum over the past few years, and I still might check back in out of habit during the occasional idle moment. But just in case I don't: it's great been knowing you guys. And if you see rslrunner, remember to tell him that I said Aeon is not a cult.

Best regards,

Pitarou

It sounds like getting out of teaching is something you wanted, so congratulations to you!

I hope you will still come 'round here. Your posts add a lot to the forum, and you still have considerable knowledge about EFL in Japan. As it is relevant, it would be great if you could share info about the language exchange app if and when appropriate.

Since getting non-teaching jobs in Japan is a topic that comes up here now and then, it might be nice if you could give us your reflections on your experience. For example, it's often said that N1-level Japanese + very strong technical skills are required to even have a chance at a non-teaching job in Japan. Was that your impression? What else helped you get the job? Any advice for others who want to do the same?

32 paydays to go, and I'll be done with teaching. (retirement)

Are you leaving Japan or just leaving teaching and still staying in Japan? Congrats either way!

Many thanks.

And by the way, if you want to work as a direct hire ALT in Narita district, now would be a good time to send your resumé to Narita Board of Education.

The address is:

Congratulations! Though you are leaving teaching, it doesn't sound like you will be moving that far out of education! Please be sure to update us about the app as it comes to fruition!

So you've been at the new startup for a few weeks. What are your initial impressions? Are you averaging a lot more working hours a week?

A lot more, yes. And my commute's gone from 10 minutes to 2 hours.

Whatever complaints I have, the fact remains that I'm learning to write iPhone apps on somebody else's dime -- that's worth a lot. Smile
