For some reason discussion on this started of on the "Riyadh Terrs" thread. Thanks to the poster there who gave us the link when no other news media had it.
First news on the web that I saw was on Skynews. BBC and Yahoo were very slow in picking up on it. Hear in EP we heard about it on the bush telegraph before we saw any cybernews.
Bad business. Many will leave for summer and not come back. This poster will probably be one of them.

Dear scot47,
Remember: When the going gets tough, the tough get going - to the airport.

Dear veiledssentiments,
Not to upstage scot, but I'd say it's about just a grenade's throw away.

Now, John,
That sounds like the type of humor that I would expect from an ex-military man.
On a more serious note, I expect that the folks who do the hiring for the educational institutions of the Kingdom are searching for their antacids.

I was in downtown Al-Khobar this morning buying my foreign currency. I knew nothing and saw nothing of the attacks. I heard about it when I got back to my house !
Bad news. Another step to the "Algerianisation" of Saudi Arabia ? |

Doesn't make our job any easier! And to add to the fun the email keeps going down so all the hordes of people that are teliling us they want to come to Saudi are getting their messages bounced. |

Are you serious? Is it really hordes of people or are you being facetious? Are hiring standards going down or changing at all? are pay increases and other perks being considered? Are truely qualified people still interested in coming to KSA? Can those of us that are already here expect 'bonuses' for staying?
Honestly, I would have to question a person on why they would apply for a position in KSA at this time. Maybe not Muslims, but why would a non-muslim want to come here now? Not as an ESL instructor at least, because the pay is not that good. I guess that since I am from Chi-Town, I'm use to watching my back.

Dear Saudi4Ever,
Ah, but perhaps you forget - many of those in the EFL field are looney tunes anyway.
Heck, I've even giving some thought (fleeting though it may have been) to going back.

True, John...very true! I have encountered some true wierdos. Are you considered wierd? My dh probably fits the profile, but we are here as a family. It's usually the single british men that appear to be the looniest!
So John on a scale of 1-10, 10 being if you can get a great package or your old job back plus a raise then you are on the next flight back to KSA and 1 being no way in hell will I ever come back no matter how much they pay me and 5 being if I convert to islam I may come back, insha'Allah...where are you? |

Dear Saudi4Ever,
I guess I'm about a 4 - my plans for the future include getting married (yet again, No. 3 - the triumph of hope over experience) on September 4th, and my bride-to-be is not exactly enthralled by the idea of my returning there. If I were "unencumbered" by any personal relationship, well, I'd probably be giving a return more serious consideration. Yes, I suppose I am, by some definitions, anyway, weird - but I have to admit that I incline at least slightly towards the notion that "when your numbers up, it's up", no matter where you might be.
"A merchant in Baghdad sent his servant to the market.
The servant returned, trembling and frightened. The
servant told the merchant, "I was jostled in the market,
turned around, and saw Death.
"Death made a threatening gesture, and I fled in terror.
May I please borrow your horse? I can leave Baghdad
and ride to Samarra, where Death will not find me."
The master lent his horse to the servant, who rode away,
to Samarra.
Later the merchant went to the market, and saw Death in
the crowd. "Why did you threaten my servant?" He asked.
Death replied,"I did not threaten your servant. It was
merely that I was surprised to see him here in Baghdad,
for I have an appointment with him tonight in Samarra."
I'm in Santa Fe, New Mexico and I gues I'll be here for the foreseeable future.
Regards,
John |
