Will Scotland get independence?

CNN reported today the results of surveys asking how people intend to vote:

53% - No

47% - Yes

I wonder how much that will actually change when people actually head out to vote. My guess is not much.

Its' obviously close, but won't be close enough for the Yes side to win.

Don't be so sure. Polls are skewed in favour of fatcats, who tend to be "No"-voters.

There doesn't need to be, after all Scotland already has its own flag and anyway the Union Flag uses a much deeper blue than that used on the saltire.

If the rest of the UK changed the flag then think of the cost to businesses not just in the UK but also any Commonwealth countries whose own standard includes the Union Flag.

Can't see it happening.

But it won't be a dissolved union - there will still be three countries in it. Unless of course England decide to cut loose as well.

The first union flag was created to symbolise the union between the Scottish and English kingdoms. While the queen will still remain the ruling monarch, it is this first union which might be dissolved, thus rendering the flag meaningless.

True, the same thing could, and has been, argued with regard to Ireland leaving the union. No changes were made then either. Usually the retention of Northern Ireland was used as the basis that the cross of St Patrick was still needed. But in reality...?

The flag may very well go the way of flags of other failed states...
