Privet, teachers in Russia.

I am wondering if any of your employers have (unlikely as it seems) adjusted ruble salaries upwards as a response to the falling value of the local currency.

I ask because I saw an EFL job advertisement in which the ruble salary was much higher than I would expect for a run-of-the-mill teaching gig (90,000/month, FYI). Perhaps that has always been the rate there, but I assumed it was due to the ruble's struggles. The advert: http://www.eslcafe.com/joblist/index.cgi?read=33915

Not sure how to interpret that ad. Is this per month? Even so 156 hours is about 40 hours per week. That is quite a heavy teaching commitment, and not that attractive.

Could be reading the ad incorrectly though... Have had rather a touch too much good water today... Hic!

I'm assuming that means academic hours. Still, 156 hours is certainly not unheard of for language schools (though I think 144 is more the norm).

Look at this gem -- 27,500 for 130 hours/month: http://www.eslcafe.com/joblist/index.cgi?read=33890

But back to the point: Most EFL positions advertised for Russia are in the 40,000/month range (even at 144 hours, that is far less than 90,000 for 156 hours), so I'm curious if this salary advertised in an anomaly or if ruble salaries as a whole are going up to attract/keep teachers.

Cheers.

Dunno if there has been an increase in rates in schools. Doubt it. But even so, this 90K figure is still on the low side for that teaching load. Or maybe I;ve just forgotten how bad it is in Macland.

I united and broke out of mine. I had nothing to lose but my chainschools!

There was a discussion about this mob not long ago. Before all the hoo-ha started in Russia, they were offering 60,000 a month with free accommodation. The job advertisement you posted doesn't include accommodation, so they haven't raised the salary level. I would say that 30 academic hours a week is the norm with most chain schools, and even that is a big workload. You would only be living to work if you worked 156 academic hours a month.

These guys are continuously advertising, which is a good indication of the conditions and turnover rate.

Privet. A late response, but if anyone cares to know, my employer has increased our salaries - not to rub it in or anything if yours hasn't done the same.

Congrats, that's good to hear! Do you know other teachers who have experienced the same fortune?

Congrats, indeed. Haven't heard of anyone else getting any increase. Though some of my students report their salaries have been cut...
