Hawthorn are advertising and offering 850 pcm plus shared accommodation in Muscat. Getting to be a bit of a joke.

Guess there are some jokers who will accept.

For that kind of money you can work elsewhere and have well behaved students plus a greater degree of freedom in your professional and personal life.

Falling salaries are probably a reflection of the increasing national deficit.

Colleagues have not been paid for overtime, which was forced upon them half a year ago. They are too afraid to complaint out of fear of losing their job. The exploitation continues.

Hi MuscatGary. Do you still have the link to the job ad handy? I just did a very quick search on Google, but didn't see it. If you do have it at your fingertips, and don't mind, can you please post it? Many thanks.

and they want up to 25 hours a week teaching AND only 30 days holiday! I think this is related to the oil price/budget difficulties. Only a mug would take it.

Falling TEFL salaries is nothing new...this is happening everywhere not just in Oman. Reasons are as follows:

1. Oversupply of recent TEFL graduates in the market and a huge pool of experienced and highly qualified jobless native English speaking teachers seeking work overseas (especially in the GCC countries) where TEFL salaries are on average the highest paid in the world..
2. Employers cutting back (staff, benefits, reducing costs, more regulations and rules for those seeking employment etc.
3. The New World Economic Order.....people have less money to spend as prices/cost of living rises and wages fall as well as increased competition for jobs in the EFL manpower aka labor force...other reasons cannot be discussed on this forum. Shocked Shocked Shocked

Considering most teachers are short sighted and are only interested in their own individual plights, I'll say the downward trend in salaries is no surprise. This is what they get for being more 'cowboy' in their thinking. I know in the higher-paying regions such as the ME, I saw much more backbiting, teacher vs teacher conflict, and dog-eat-dog thinking than in places that paid a lot less, such as Thailand. Unifying in some sort of common or unified front is apparently something they can not fathom, so they reap what they sow. United we all stand. Divided we all fall. That's true anywhere. Want higher salaries? Form some kind of union. Concentrate some kind of power. But know this will require actually cooperating and coming together. It does not mean trying to gain one upmanship in the name of temporary job security. It means working with your colleagues and not thinking of ways to make them look bad and maybe even getting them terminated. UNITE.

....

UNITE.

Please elaborate on how you believe forming a teachers' union will boost salaries. Confused

Trying to form a union in the Gulf will only earn you a quick exit. We're a dime a dozen...

Yup. In recent memory there have been two long discussions on this topic, both extremely vituperative and repetitive. Started by Jerome Baxter and kvisko--at least take a look before re-igniting!

ETA: I see the original thread by kvisko was deleted and replaced by a secondary discussion. The original was indeed one "hamster-wheel."

Amen to that. Unionize and they go from a low salary to no salary. But, hey, I'm curious as to what CVN-76's "vision" is for an expat teachers' union.

How can salaries ever increase when TEFL teachers are as easy to find these days as cleaners?

You'll have to remain curious. I won't be distilling out any grandiose plans for unity among teachers. Especially for those in the Middle East. I'm done with that part of the world. You will have to be creative on your own in solving the "salary problem".
