Incapable of appropriate behaviour when travelling on their "Gap Year" ? I have seen similar lunacies amongst younger TEFLers.

(Not in Saudi Arabia !)

In fact the main culprit is no teen. 23 years old.

Just totally insensitive to the fact that other countries have other cultural norms. And that everyone doesn't automatically love them - they're totally lovable, after all! Rolling Eyes

Proles go to Magaluf. The aspirational middle classes do it in Malaysia.

In fact the lead in the story is no teen, but a 23 year-old with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

Not just striping but of causing the earthquake:

"The four were freed from jail after pleading guilty to committing obscene acts in a public place, as they were accused of causing the quake by stripping atop Mount Kinabalu."

Well, maybe the Malaysians are right - I mean, have you ever SEEN a nude Canadian? Very Happy

Regards,
John

In my adolescence I often salivated at the thought of Geneviève Bujold (Anne of the Thousand Days) in her birthday suit.

Every paper this week in the UK has been full of tales from Magaluf, the hot destination for young British drunkards to get sunburned. The authorities in Mallorca have wearily tried to stop Brits from getting too smashed and too naked - there are now fines for drinking or urinating in the street and dire warnings have been issued against the potentially lethal practice of 'balconing' -jumping between and off hotel balconies.

However, the locals don't seem hopeful. Magaluf is Magaluf and until Islamic State marauds across the Straits of Gibraltar and raises the black flag, it's probably going to stay that way. There is, of course, a massive snobbery in the way Magaluf stories are reported in the British press. The subtext is - look at the vulgarity of those ghastly working class Brits who are too poor to stay in a villa in Ibiza.

The point is that Brits abroad have an amply justified bad reputation. We chatter all the time about cutting down on immigration. Other nations must gawp at the cheek of it. Surely our biggest problem is not the people we let in, but those we allow out.

You should be pleased then. She won't be entering your profession.
