they're advertising on this site with an ad that says "competitive salary"
Anyone know what this currently is? From what I heard a couple of years ago, "competitive" wouldn't be the adjective I'd choose. |

I had an interview with them a short while ago, and I asked the direct question (as one would) what the salary was?
There was a very long pregnant pause, and then stuttering...
The guy then said something about overtime being available at the moment.
I never got the actual figure, he seemed too embarrassed to say.
Probably around 12,000 I should imagine. Bumped up by overtime as he said.
But, I understand they are decent employers. |

From KFUPM's FAQ page:

What criteria do you use to calculate my basic salary?
- Your basic salary is normally calculated on the KFUPM salary scale which is based on your academic qualifications and your relevant years of work experience.

I suspect they require employment verification letters/certificates, which is typical of direct-hire positions. Scot47 can confirm if that's the case. |

Employment verification letters are not needed. Up-to-date references are needed.. Salary is low to average dependent on quals. They are decent employers. However, they have a rather quirky system whereby you have to sign the contract before they will interview you! |

Currentaffairs that wasn't my experience - I was interviewed by them in April (last), and they indicated I would be starting in October. I maintained contact with them over most of that period (apart from the holidays).
Come October three things happened:
1. I was told that there may be an imminent stop on all recruitment until September 2016
2. I was then advised my contract of employment, after all, would be sent to me very shortly.
3. Then it just went completely dead, and I never heard from them again.
I assume what I had originally be told, had in fact happened. Namely that all recruitment had been put on hold until later this year.
To be honest, I found them rather frustrating to deal with. Notwithstanding the fact that everybody seems to agree that they are good employers. |

I am relaying info from the last few months of 2015. Maybe departments operate in different ways or things changed? Did you supply employment verification letters? |

No, they only requested up to date references.
Everything was supplied that they requested.
They authenticated my qualifications.
But, as I say it all ended rather abruptly. |

Is that the case for those who are only using their previous Saudi experience for salary calculations? It seems doubtful someone new to KSA wouldn't need to submit verification of prior TEFL experience gained in China, Japan, Morocco, the US, etc. |

Maybe something was "off" with your references. |

They offered me around 13-13.5k per month. So about 45 USD a year, with possibiltiy for overtime. Also, like DS, I didn't submit any letters, but just gave contact into for four people for them to contact.
It was rumored to be a very nice place to work, but I was after more moolah. I never really cancled on them, I just stopped hearing from them. I signed a contract in March and then didn't hear boo. Then, come January, I recieved an email saying that orientation would be in room 219 sometime next week. I had already moved on by then. This was a year or two ago. |

I never understood how they selected a place on the salary scale for you. About SAR13,000 to 14,000 would sound right for someone with good experience. That is paid over 12 months but teaching in the two main semesters is only for 30weeks. Teaching in the summer semester will boost it considerably. The masochistic can choose to do evening classes for some more.
Monthly base salary increases regularly. It is a nice place to work. PM if you wish to ask and "delicate" questions. |

I hear this a lot e.g. that KFUPM are good to work for but reading this thread, it is quite obvious that is not the whole story.
Making you sign a contract BEFORE you have an interview? Seriously? And 12,000-14,000 SARs a month is derisory for someone with a masters and CELTA/DELTA + a few year's experience. Who would seriously want to live in the Magic Kingdom for such a paltry amount?
With a few years teaching experience under my belt and a CELTA and a masters, I applied to 3 departments at KFUPM regarding existing vacancies on their website. I had to complete 3 separate and lengthy online applications and upload all my qualifications and certificates and good references.
That was about 2 years ago and I have not heard a word back from any of them since, not even an acknowledgement of receipt of my applications, which tells you something about their admin as well.
No. This is not the behaviour of a good employer. |

Just for the record, this was not my experience. I interiveiwed, was hired, accepted, and then signed a contract. If they had not been interested in my resume, I doubt I would have heard anything form them -- just like everwhere else.
And as for the question of who would want to live in Saudi for a decent - but not spectacular - salary, well, in my case, the answer would be someone who did the wild ESL teacher thing for a few years, married a nice local girl, had a kid or two, and wanted to settle somewhere for a few years on something more than a hogwan salary. If I was a swinging bachelor, I wouldn't even consider it. Those were the days.... |

The salary may seem so-so, but considering they provide family housing, tuition fees, airfare for dependents, 60 days annual paid vacation, etc., it sort of evens out. Besides, we've been saying that salaries have been on the decline the past 10 years. (I guess some folks are still in denial.) |

No, the references checked out. I spoke to the recruitment chappie on the phone (I won't mention his name, I have no wish to embarrass him) and he said it was just a matter of getting the contract out to me for signature.
I rather feel that a stop was put on recruitment until later this year, as I was told at one point.
As Balzac said, the admin is probably not up to much. That is the impression I got. That is not to say they are not good employers once you are in. |
