This is making big news in the UK due to the fact she medaled in judo at the commonwealth games.

Scary. It seems she may not have been wearing a helmet. I don't live in Vietnam but when I was vacationing there I would use the motorcycle taxis. There isn't much choice I think for getting around with public transportation non existent in many cases.
Her travel insurance had run out and now her family and friends are attempting to raise a quarter of a million pounds through go fund me. |

Yeah, most English teachers here don't have a license and don't have insurance. Add in the craziness of Vietnamese streets, and I can't believe anyone would willingly drive without a helmet.
Even if you have insurance paid for by your school, it likely won't cover motorbike accidents if you're driving without a license. This story is a good reminder that every time you hop the bike you're rolling the dice. |

All true, but if you read the reports, you'll find that this poor girl was a passenger on a xe om. |

I'm deeply skeptical that an insurance policy would pay out following an accident as a passenger on a xe om.
I feel great sympathy for this young woman and her family and hope they get her home soon. |

I stand to be corrected but, I don't think travel insurance applies for a 6-month stay in a foreign country.
I think expat insurance, or a different insurance program is needed.
Anyway, sad story and hopefully there will be some sort of recovery.
Skirt caught on a wheel? Freak accident.
Hate to sound repetitive, but ALWAYS wear a helmet. |

If you are a regular xe om customer, it must be best to buy and use your own helmet. The xe om drivers usually have the really cheap helmets that won't help much anyway. Besides that, who knows about the last person that wore the helmet. |

It seems she was wearing an Ao Dai and it got caught in the wheel.
Local women take care to tuck in theirs when riding a motorbike or especially as a passenger. Maybe this woman did not think to do that.
On the helmet - I suspect she had one on since it would otherwise be in the articles. But a helmet will not save you if you fall hard on your head. The brain will bounce around in the liquid it floats in.
A helmet is worth the hassle of course. Who wants fractured skull or cuts and crazes to the head/face.
Best to get one that covers the ears and sides of the face with a clear visor. The motor racing style that covers the jaw/chin may well be worthwhile. |

I have been using travel insurance for a decade. I have had two pay outs; one for theft and one for a cycling accident. |

It depends on the insurance policy and on the pay out.
Small pay outs are more readily made than the huge payouts this unfortunate young woman would need.
A travel insurance policy might pay a few dollars without making detailed inquiries. But if they can get out of a big payout they will. They have experts whose job it is to find grounds to refuse payment.
Even an expat policy may not payout in this case due to using a xe om. They may claim she should claim on to the driver's insurance [yeah - I know]. |

Your post does NOT address my above comments at all.
What are you referring to?
I know many people that have had insurance payouts and I have insurance now. |

I know MANY people who paid their insurance premiums and got RIPPED OFF when they had an accident or illness.
Insurance is a business, obviously. |

Well, you said you stand to be corrected in the fact that travel insurance does not apply for stays of more than 6 months in a country.
I get contracts for a year or more. I buy travel insurance for a full year and stay in that country for a year and in the past I have made claims and have been paid.
I think that answers your statement FULLY. |

In what way did they get ripped off?
Naturally, insurance companies will do everything they can to not pay, but from personal experience, if you have the right documents such as a police report, they have to pay.
Perhaps I am reading into your comments wrongly, but you seem to be implying insurance is a waste of money because they won't pay out. |

Ripped off as in dubious fine print in the Riders.
After years of paying premiums, a mate of mine made a small claim. The insurance company paid it, but when he went to renew the following year they raised the new premiums to exorbitant amounts.
No, I am not implying insurance is a waste of money.
Just be very careful of the policy you sign and have a qualified lawyer look at the riders before you commit. |
