I just heard this announced a few hours ago! The NY Times article includes a photo showing a woman driving with obviously impaired peripheral vision. I wonder how that issue will be dealt with? Ah well, that is but a minor detail, compared to the historic nature of this change in women's lives.

Not this string again. Give it up Guys and Gals. This is becoming boring. If you want to drive as a woman than don't come to Saudi Arabia. It"s as simple as that.

I'm afraid the king disagrees with you. He has signed a royal decree allowing women to drive beginning in June 2018.

well maybe I should read the papers more. Last time I turned on the news was in 1987. Hmmmm....
Does the world still spin in the same direction?

One wonders if it will go into effect... and for how many? Many families will not allow their females the freedom.
Another question is if and when it would extend to expat women.

it's part of vision (hindsight) 2030
It will probably be delayed, put off, forgotten about, put on the back burner, procrastinated, ignored, and then rethought about till then. (not necessarily in that order)

ps I peeked outside and noticed the sun still sets in the west, so I guess the world is turning the same way according to scientists. I still think the world is flat and the sun turns around it |

Agreed. Women drive in other hot countries or parts of those countries with a desert climate. |

Not sure what being a hot desert has to do with it... but... the first thing that I would do when I arrived in any other Gulf country was get the local license (quick and easy) and buy a car. In Oman, I had a car within a couple days of arrival. Almost as quickly in both Kuwait and the UAE...

This obsession with the horseless carriage is a passing fad. |

Although wearing a niqab is cultural and not a religious mandate, it's unlikely the Saudi government would prohibit those women who wear one from having it down over their faces while driving. (If other GCC countries have such a regulation, not all of them seem to enforce it.) |

An interesting point. AFAIK, in the Sultanate of Oman it is a government rule that women in banks, colleges, and offices, have to leave their face uncovered. There may be some wiggle room, but I do remember someone telling me it was a decree from Sultan Qaboos and the Shura council.
