I am just wondering if there are any inexpensive airlines in HK like there are in Europe (Ryan Air, Easy Jet).
I am looking to travel from HK to Tokyo, any suggestions?
Thanks,

Get real, who would use such a service? HK is not exactly known as a backpacker's paradise, is it? Besides, the prices are budget enough as it is with all the major carriers following the blows the industry has experienced in recent years. I can not believe how cheap some fares and holidays to Japan are at the moment. |

Apparently Air Asia offer some very cheap deals flying out of Macau.
Does anyone know if this was a summer promotion or a year-round thing? |

Air Asia's Web site currently mentions 14 weekly flights between Macau and Bangkok.
In Macau, dial 852 3167 2299.
Office 20, Mezzanine Level, Passenger Terminal
Macau International Airport
"Asia's first low fare no frills airline to introduce 'ticketless' traveling". |

It seems that one of the problems for airlines wanting to do this out of HK is the high cost of landing charges at HK airport. That is why initially the carriers have opted to fly out of Macau. Singapore Air have just launched a new low cost carrier called Tiger. Below is a quote from http://www.luchtzak.be/article3672.html
"Tony Ryan, the founder of successful European low-cost carrier Ryanair, is part of the venture along with the Singapore government's investment arm, Temasek Holdings, and US private investors Indigo Partners. SIA will own a majority of the airline with Temasek, which will have an 11 percent stake in Tiger Airways. Temasek is already SIA's majority shareholder. SIA will hold a 49 percent stake.
Ryan's Irelandia Investments, which no longer has interests in Ryanair, will hold a 16 percent stake while Indigo, a private equity investment firm headed by US businessmen David Bonderman and Bill Franke, have the remaining 24 percent.
Tiger Airways will begin operations from Changi airport in the second half of 2004.
Tiger Airways will operate a fleet of single-aisle aircraft that will fly up to four hours from Singapore."
My guess is that it is only a matter of time until we get one operating out of HK.
In HK we have historically paid much higher prices to fly around Asia than other countries. Why on earth Ludwig seems to think that nobody in Hong Kong would want cheap short haul flights is beyond me. Singapore is also not known as being a backpackers paradise, (nor for that matter are any of the places in Europe that are home to such carriers), and they have seen fit to introduce such a service. |

Because Luddy would sooner jump without a parachute than sit next to a backpacker on a flight?? |

There really is no need for low cost airlines here, as HK is a major transport hub. packages to Tokyo, including a hotel can be as low as 4000HK, which is very reasonable. Dragon Air and Northwest tend to be the cheapest.
Cathay is doing a promotion to Singapore for $880
And Bangkok is always cheap cheap cheap, with 11 airlines flying the route - packages in 5 star hotels start at around 5000HK in peak season...
And if you're REALLY on a budget, then Air Asia from Macau! |

Well, if you want to be unforthcoming and ignore the fact that Asia's only budget airline has offices and flights in neighbouring Macau that are being used regularly by 1000s.....
Air Asia is the continent's first budget airline and is based in Malaysia but has regular flights to/from Thailand, Macau, Indonesia, Singapore etc. I have just bought a return flight from Macau - Bangkok - Macau for 475 kuai, although I was particularly fortunate that my chosen departure and return dates were midweek and mid-November when they could offer the cheapest deal. www.airasia.com Even their regular deals are incredibly cheap.
Lastminute.com.hk gave me a great deal on a ticket back to London on Virgin. One-way was 3500kuai and it was very easy just to post the equivalent in Hong Kong dollars from Bank of China Jilin to their bank account in Bank of China (HK). |

Even if true, none of the above dribble is of any help whatsoever to someone seeking a cheap and cheerful flight from HK to Japan now though, is it?
Note also that another HK resident, 'Joachim' fully agrees with my comments. Indeed, he paraphrases me when he writes that "There really is no need for low cost airlines here, as HK is a major transport hub. packages to Tokyo, including a hotel can be as low as 4000HK, which is very reasonable".
What part of HK do you reside in again, 'Craptain'? |

'Hedgepig', you really are a worryingly self-protective and spleeny fat-kidneyed miscreant.
I'm not in Hong Kong right now and in fact I haven't been since the hand-over ceremony in 1997. I guess that means I cannot post anything in the Hong Kong forum anymore.
If we follow that logic then we won't see any more of your posts in the China forums and you will be stuck like General Zod here in the wilderness of the Hong Kong pages. That would be a tragedy.

Actually, along with the others, I think you are wrong on both counts (again).
First, you do not live here and so know little if anything about the place. You are, in short, a dreamer.
Second, I, in fact, am on the grim Mainland at least once a month, usually in a different city each time. Obviously it follows that I have vastly more experience of the Mainland than yourself. Or perhaps you can top 35 cities? |

Apologies to all other posters - I tried so hard not to reply to this - really I did! I promise I'll never take his bait again.
'Hedgepig' (two can play at that lame game),
Yet again you are being a churlish and evil-eyed waterfly.
35 cities (to paraphrase Chris Morris) is a pathetic amount of cities. As some people here know, I first came to China in 1989, as part of a returning diplomatic team trying to restore normal relations with Beijing.
By 1996 I had been to every Province in China, even Taiwan.
I have no claim to be an expert on Hong Kong and will, finally, leave this forum so posters can contine to be misinformed by your dirge.

I haven't seen Ludwig post anything but useless, insulting, vitriolic comments. There's nothing wrong with being honest (brutally if necessary sometimes), but reading posts on this forum is like watching children fight in the playground- pretty sad.
Case in point- this thread which started off as a request for info and airfare and somehow turned into some kind of ridicuous pissing competition about who visited more cities- who really cares!
This particular Hong Kong forum is truly becoming useless. It seems like certain personailites are just waiting to pounce and twist every thread into a reason to beat their chests and abuse others.
Clearly this wasn't the intention of the forum.
Where are the moderators? Isn't it time to lock out Ludwig and others who continue with their sad little tantrums? |

I can't be bothered to go through the amount of inaccurate posts you have made about HK Ludwig, but obviously living here hasn't improved your accuracy much either. But this is funny:

There are no "others"; only joachim, who unless he/she has a multiple personality, would not count as plural. |
