Guys,

I guess this topic was already opened here, but I'm still hoping for something new.

I need to get my visa renewed next week. I heard some rumors that it's possible to apply for a extention on the 'yabanci subesi' instead of crossing the border. Does anyone know about that ?

Another question. If I do cross the border, Can I go back in the same day? Or do I have to wait until date is changed in order to go back and have my visa actually renewed?

Thanx,
Ido

You might look into getting a residence permit. It doesn't make you legal to work but it allows you to stay for a year without doing border runs. if anyone asks, you are a writer or you are doing research. I think it costs 200-300YTL and you might have to show you have a certain amount of money in the bank (last year it was $5000, which I borrowed from my school for a day). I have also heard that you can go to the emniyet to get a one-time extension of your tourist permit, but if you are going to go through the hassle of that, just get the residence permit. and if you buy a house here you get a 10-year residence permit Smile

You should've done a runner with the money. I would love to get the chance to rip off a language school, it would be such sweet revenge for all they have done to their teachers, students, parents, companies and ancillary staff.

5 grand sounds awful tempting. What could they have done to stop you? I guess if you're in a POS (position of responsibility) you might feel that you have to fullfil your duty. I've never been tested with this amount of flthy lucre, but I don't know what I would've done. I should point out that I've never worked for a Turkish language school either, so I'm viewing the world through pink glasses, so to speak.

ok.

First: Should I wait atleast 24 hours/until date changes before I reenter to Turkey or can I do it in the same day, if I have a ride back ?

Second: Is there a minimum requirement for how long your passport is valid? I just noticed (and rememberd) that my passport is valid until April (before I go and extend it).... would it make a problem?

Does anyone have this information by any chance?

I think your passport needs to have at least 6 months remaining on it. Not sure how strict they are about this though.

you need to get your passport renewed before you do an extension or a residence permit. I'm Canadian and had mine renewed here, no prob, took about a week.

of course everyone dreams about having a chunk of cash like that, but there is too much bad karma associated with theft. we also got ripped off for a lesser amount by a teacher who we got a residence permit for. He also got an advance to pay for his customs duties and soon after went ballistic (nothing to do with the school, let me hasten to add). So, chunks of money can come and go.

i also know people who have been illegal here, and they pay a fine when they leave, unless they know someone helpful Wink However, for people from South Africa and other countries, it is more difficult and they may not be able to come back for a few months or years (it doesn't seem to be clear).

Re: passport renewals. I am a Canadian too (whoops, blew me cover!) and had to renew it about a year ago. However, due to various time restraints because of work I couldnt make 2 midweek trips to Ankara to drop it off and pick it up. I contacted the embassy a month before I needed to do it and told them of my situation, then I arranged with my school for a day off. Because I had contacted the embassy early, the actual processing time the day I was there was... half an hour. I was in at 9am, out by half past. Not bad.

My Ikhamet (residence permit) ran out towards the end of December. An application to renew was put through the school in early December.
I pointed out to the person responsible at the school that I was due to fly to England on the 16th at the beginning of this week.
I was asked for more photographs, the old ikhamet and my passport.

At the time of writing, I have no passport (or any other ID) and am due to tavel on Sunday! I hope to be able to report good news tomorrow!

How many passport photos do you reckopn you've had to hand over in this country? I think before I came here I'd maybe used 20 in my whole life. I think if I got away with 20 per year here I'd be happy. How can one document need 12 pictures? Who's making money from this? Does someone in power own a photographic development company? It probably just means that 12 people can be employed to file away the same document in 12 different buildings, all of whoich you'll have to visit at some time or another in order to be told that you have to go to one of the other buildings which you've just been directed from.

Well, with your stringent recruitment policies I would have thought you would have weeded out all the bad eggs.

POS, has anyone heard of this.

You cannot call being a glorified DOS of a chain of tefl mills a position of responsibility. It justifies the hourly paid, no hols, no sick pay by saying a few top earners make 700 quid a month. Sure they do when there are 31 days in a month, no hols and a lot of luck. Over the year they make about 400 a month. The ET teachers should be celebrating their hols instead of worrying how they are going to make ends meet. If this system was beneficial to the teachers they wouldn't have introduced it.

Life's too short
