Hello,

Just wondering if the Jan 31 deadline for NET applications is absolute and final? Meaning if I were to fax an application in today.... would it be considered or trashed?

Thanks.

I am not sure about how strict they are on the guidelines...submit and find out...is the best advice I can give you.

But if they are strict and you still want to apply for a job...keep an eye on the south china morning post for ads. A lot of schools look for their own teachers and will advertise on their own. You will see ads appear throughout the spring and into the summer. So just keep looking...

Just guessing here, but according the South China Morning Post (our major EL newspaper) they have only recruited 50 percent of the NETs that they need..so go ahead and send, I don't really think that they are in a postion to complain about a few days. They will probably announce a new deadline soon (they did this last year and the situation seems worse now)

Just checked their website (EMB). Primary NETs application deadline is now Feb 29th.

Well, if you are equivocal about coming to HK, then I wouldn't bother applying. It is not an easy environment to adjust to, and it is not an easy place to get hired for a good job.

im wondering...............
is it really IMPOSSIBLE to find a job from abroad as a English Teacher in HK?

I have applying to the primary NET (..i kinda lack the B.Ed or equiv. qualification) ...only because i heard really how desperate they are this year again.

I also see posts for English Teacher/Developers in the SCMP.com...are those mostly for locals or do visa permit applying candidates stand a chance?

I hold a HKID as well as Canadian birth certificate, is it better to apply as a Canadian or as a HK Permanent Resident?

Thanks

If you have HK id then half the battle is over. Apply as both, but as you can imagine, there are not many local companies that like to hire sight unseen as there are lots of people already in HK who fit the requirements.

Hi,

What is the American equivalent of a PGDE? Reviewing the NET scheme,

"(ii) A Post-graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) majoring in English or equivalent; and"

I have the qualifications with the exception of the PGDE requirement.

In addition, in which program is there a greater chance of being accepted: secondary or primary?

Thanks.

Also, do you have a link to the EMB where it says the deadline was extended for applications? I looked at site but didn't see it.

Try:

http://www.netscheme.org.hk/recruit/recruit.html

and scroll down on the LH side to `RECRUITMENT`

It now reads (for Primary NETs) `28th February`

Hmmm...

If that were the case then wouldn't they have no need to extend the NET deadline? Or is a double deadline par for the course with the NET scheme? It happened last year too, didn't it?

Actually the scheme does receive a lot of applicants, but I guess someone who isn't here wouldn't know that.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Andy - I can tell why you're such a valuable source of information on this forum!

I'm sure Once Again will have the prerequisite intelligence to answer my questions.

Mark O

Thanks.

Actually there are a lot of people here with the requisite requirements to join the NET scheme. Those of us who live here know that. Often times schools recruit on their own if they don't get someone they like form the EMB. By no means are schools begging for teachers.

One reason the deadline was pushed back was that a great many of the teachers are Australian and they are the only group of people that have a significantly different time table for interviewing and deciding whether to take up a post. By different I mean different from the typical northern hemisphere school time tables. The EMB recognises this.

There are other reasons, which I don't have time to get into now.

Perhaps, Once Again can elaborate on his remarks...

I eat my words - thank you, Andy; that was the information I was seeking. I didn't mean to be arrogant so as to question Once Again's judgement, I just found the situation a bit perplexing and wondered why it existed.
