No one will look at your ticket. There is no requirement for an outgoing ticket in Mexico.

Incidentally, in the Latin American countries where supposedly you DO need a round trip ticket I have never been held to that--nor has anyone else I know.

Thanks! It always feels official once you actually get to buy that ticket....so I've been anxiously awaiting the response to this post.

Some airlines might put up a fuss, but I think generally you can get a one-way ticket to most anywhere in Latin America. I just bought one (for a student) from Mexico City to Costa Rica. CR is a place where I usually see trouble with a one-way trip.

I flew into Mexico City last May from the U.S. with a one-way ticket. I had no problems, mostly because the person from Immigration who stamped my tourist card with the number of days I was allowed to stay did not ask to see my plane ticket, only my passport and the aforementioned tourist card.

Hi Sara,
Welcome to your adventure in teaching in Mexico! I am sure you have already been told this but it will be best when you enter the country not to mention to the Migracion that you will be teaching English while here. The reason being, the tourist visa (FMT) on which you will be entering does not permit lucrative activities and could complicate matters to mention it.

In 1995 I was not allowed onto the plane to Mexico at LAX without an onward ticket. Can't remember what airline it was, but they insisted. However I had flown there before on a ticket from Malaysia-LA-Mexico City, with a stop over in LA. Anyways, the airline staff wouldn't let me check in without an onward ticket.

I was travelling on an Australian passport, maybe they just like to ++++ with foreigners, a trait fairly common to gringos in uniforms.

Thanks everyone! I wasnt planning on declaring my intent to teach and just curious if anyone had had any issues. Seems to be smooth sailing (until May 22nd when I have to post that I was not able to enter Mex on my one way ticket...) Wink

It's not that big of a deal to mention that you are arriving to start a teaching job. Immigration rarely says a word to you anyway. It is quite common to obtain your FM3, when a school wishes to sponsor you, from within Mexico anyway.

Is this still the case in el DF? I heard they have been getting a little tighter the past few months. And is a 4 week TEFL/Celta essential for a work visa? I have a postgrad in education as well as tefl certificate, but from a shorter course. Any advice much appreciated...

As far as I know, there are still no problems with one way tickets...just had a teacher buzz through for a TEFL course on a one way ticket. He then bought another one to get to Costa Rica for a job.

Work visa will probably be granted more on the strength of the school's paperwork, and not yours, if you are offered a work visa. Better get in touch with the school first on that.

A friend just came in on a one-way ticket. She had no trouble with Immigration but, wierdly enough, the ticket agent questioned her quite a bit about it when she checked in.

Aren't one way tickets usually more expensive than round trip? I've taken a couple of one-way trips before and it was always cheaper for me to book round trip and just skip the return flight.
