Recent reports show that other countries now surpass the U.S. in obesity.
Turkey, was not yet mentioned in the report, but Cyprus is on the list of places with more obesity rates among people than in the U.S.
One can assume that Turkey, will see obesity rates rise as the economy improves....and one can already see the difference between students in the Private Kolej system, compared with the Public system schools. In the Private Kolej places, ghost saw a huge number of "fatties."
One already sees corner market stores in Turkey doing a very brisk business with all the junk they sell (Ulker cookies, chips, sugary sodas etc...)...

| You can see pizzas and chips (fries) in the frozen food sections of supermarkets. These things didn't exist in Turkey a few years ago. |

I have noticed in my time at ET that at first many tefl teachers would come in at weekends with a sandwich or an apple for breakfast. But as time has passed they now come in with poagca or that obesity nightmare-borek. How many calories do you think is in a portion of cheese borek. Must be like 1000 plus.
What with all the stress of living in Turkey added to working illegally for a cowboy organisation, who can blame teachers for letting themselves go. |

In early and moderate stages of depression, many individuals over eat, and often with foods that are high in saturated fats and sugars.
"Comfort food" is usually nothing more than junk food.
Curious that in Turkey, the people who become rich tend to become obese, because they switch to an American style fast food diet. The poorer citizens of Turkey tend to eat a more healthy diet, with little meat and plenty of vegetables and fruits.
In North America and Europe - it is the opposite scenario. The poor in those places tend to be obese because junk food is cheap and easy to make, and the richer members are slimmer and fitter because they spend more on healthy (sometimes organic) foods rich in essential nutrients.
The educated classes in North America and Europe are more cognizant of the harmful effects of poor nutrition. One assumes that the "nouveau riche" in Turkey ignore the dangers...... |

In my experience, the rich girls here suffer from the same illness that rich girls in the the US suffer from-- anorexia, not obesity. The cultural incentive to be thin that is spread through the media has taken hold here, though often Turkish men say they like women to be round.
At the same time, I do agree that there are more people getting fatter here these days. Thanks McDonalds and Burger King. |

Ghost speaks truth.
I look forward to leaving the US for Turkey. Here I eat fast food because I can't afford healthy foods; in Turkey I'll be eating healthy food because I can't afford fast food.
I'm sure you'll find me every now and then wolfing down a big mac in kizilay. |

When ghost studied at Tomer, Kizilay branch, he went to lunch with a bunch of students every day....and there were a lot of places offering three course meals for about $1.5-$2.00 U.S. equivalent...dirt cheap and great value for money.
You would get a small soup, a main dish with rice and veg. and a dessert, and drink.
In Turkey, you will have so much choice, that you never need eat at Mickie D's again.... |

It's a bit more expensive at the moment, the $ is very weak against the mighty YTL.
Returning to Ghost's original post, can we assume that it's Greek Cyprus that's getting fat, and if so mayb this is a good reason not to join the Christian club, oops, sorry, the E.U.? |

When and if Turkey joins the EU, obesity will rise, because of more exposure to processed and fast foods. This is happening in many countries which, in the past, had relatively low rates of obesity....Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy......
Also, Turks, who make more money, tend to adopt a more American type diet, rich in fast foods.....ghost saw this at "Migros Shopping Centre" Antalya....where most of his students went to on weekends to eat at McDonalds and other junk food places in the food court there. Ghost also noticed that the little fatties in his classes tended to be the worst students, with disruptive, disrespectful behaviour.......interesting link between junk food and behaviour, eh..... |

ok, what about lack of exercise rather than just eating fast food as a cause of obesity?
Those of us who walk more, and many people in Turkey do tend to walk quite a bit, can eat a bit more. 
If your going to talk about obesity, I think you need to mention excercise too. |
