Then again don`t bother. Have a TEFL house party. We can talk about anything. |

I have little faith in associations and things that involve meetings and people attempting to reach agreements in order to take action.
On the other hand, something might be better than nothing. |

You would never get "permission" to open one. There is Egitim-Sen who were going to have to close down for trying to stick to principles. It just doesn't work in this Turkey. |

I kind of thought a proper union might be illegal...
What about an improper one then? I mean, an informal gathering of like-minded people working to inform newcomers and pressure language schools to be better?
Or is that just too hippie? |

Isnt it the job of the DOS to look after his or her teachers? |

Is it? I thought it was more akin to herding, and making sure the drunks and nutters weren't acting too drunk or nutty |

ET Calling
Never having been a DOS myself but having worked under loads of different ones I would like to comment.
Ages ago EL Gazette did a story about typical DOSes and they asked some TEFL celebrities such as Mario Rivoludicrous about typical DOSes and they had a great time taking the mick out of ''the DOS who didn't like herself'' or the DOS who ''couldn't control the teachers.'' The gist of the article was that teachers were largely under the control of DOSes who for the most part had problems.
At ET our DOSes (that is what they are even if they are not called it) are DOSes for different reasons but the overiding ones are to get a decent monthly salary, get out of the classroom, to be able to put DOS on their CV, a stepping stone to something better amongst other spurious reasons. There is no training, no checks and balances and even if a DOS has the dip -so what. The Dip has no management or personnel content and is a qualification for a teacher not a manager.
At ET one of the things the DOS has to do is teach classes on Saturday and Sunday mornings when the teacher has had too much the night before and not turned up. |
