Hi,

I lived and worked in Turkey for some time last year. While Istanbul wasn't for me i do miss it from time to time, especially the tea.

I am living in Seoul now, and have gone to the Indian and Arabic foreigner markets and asked if they have 'Turkish Tea'. Apparently they don't know what I am talking about.

So, what is the name of the tea? If you were to buy it in North America or elsewhere what would the name of the tea be?

Thanks!

It is black tea, and most (if not all) Turks add liberal amounts of sugar - certainly not very healthy.

When ghost switched to 'Green Tea' in March 2005 (without milk and sugar) weight loss was substantial. Ghost went from 82 kilos during the black tea drinking days, to just 73.5 kilos at present, thanks to large amounts of green tea. Ghost also gave up drinking coke and other carbonated beverages, which might have helped. In essence - sugar is bad, and unfortunately, sugar is present everywhere in Turkey, and in those Mini Markets, those delicious 'ulker' chocolates and cookies were always a temptation in Turkey - and Turkey even exports 'ulker' to other countries (have seen the brand in Czech Republic, Canada, and now in Taiwan!).

You will notice that most Chinese are slim, and many attribute this to the slimming contribution of green tea. Also, of course, the Chinese (and Taiwanese) do not add sugar to their green tea.

Turks love their tea, but ghost found that the Turks simply drink it too much at all times of the day - excessive you might say.

Black tea.

This link has a description of one brand:

http://www.tasteofturkey.com/mystore.php?Page=Product&Category=Tea+%28Cay%29&SubCategory1=&SubCategory2=&ProductId=4

I think it's fairly easy to order it online. (not necessarily from the site linked above - that's just what I found with a quick web search)

I bet you could use any old black tea. Or, black tea with a tablespoon of earl grey and get more or less the same results.

I'll bet the trick is double-boiling it in the Turkish-style pot, but I think you could double-boil it any old way...

You know what's really good? Black tea with one bag of lemon-mint...

Is ghost's weight solely down to drinking green tea?

The answer to that one is no. But green tea has helped, for sure, or so one imagines.

Ghost has done the following things to get its weight down from 82 kilos to 73.5 kilos.

1. Drinks green tea with no milk or sugar (previously drank black tea with milk).

2. Drinks a lot of water and fruit juice (without sugar). Previously ghost used to drink cans of coke/pepsi every day - with meals....which is a nasty habit. Coke contains about 37 spoons of sugar per can!

3. Rations the 'sweet stuff.' Now ghost will eat a few digestives. Previously, 'fatty ghost' was known to put down whole packets of cookies (like oreos) in one sitting. Also chips were a favourite - now restricted.

4. Exercise. Ghost exercises aerobically EVERY DAY for at least one hour, and usually does 1.5 hours a day, encompassing running, speed walking and stair climbing. And ghost moves fast - no hanging around. The ghost philosophy to exercise is 'no pain, no gain!'

Ghost used to just do 30 minutes exercise four times a week - not enough to burn fat.

The reason for the major diet and lifestyle change was a doctor lab. report in April 2005, which showed cholesterol above the desired level. Ghost was scared and acted fast to lose weight.

But there are still things ghost would like to eliminate. Such as switching from 'real cheese' to soy products and tofu.

Ghost still likes to end its day with a beer, and there is no problem with one beer, because it is quite healthy if drunk in moderation. People only get 'beer guts' when they start drinking to excess. The Chinese and Taiwanese also love beer, but one thing they (the Orientals) never do is to mix drinking beer with meals.....they drink separate from food, and ghost has been informed that this is one of the reasons the Chinese stay so slim and fit.

Completely eliminating sweets from the diet - this is not yet possible, as there is a psychological addiction to some sweet food. Old habits are hard to get rid of at once.

I weigh 60 kilos, or sometimes 61. I have very interesting dietary habits as well. Shall I elaborate?

I hope it doesn't involve belly button fluff.

I'm afraid that everything leads to bellybutton fluff at some point, whether we mean it to or not.

Still, I wish I had one of those giant beers that Entraillicus keeps posting...
