It's Friday. There's nothing to do. I'm taking up Baba Alex's challenge from some derailed thread or other...
In no particular order..
1) Knefe
2) When people agree with each other so vehemently it sounds like they're arguing.
3) The apparent disorder and chaos works fine. I love it when new foreigner come in and try to fix everything to the way they think it should be, and they don't know how I can be so relaxed about all of this.
4) When, with even very limeited Turkish, you can make little jokes that Turks like so much.
5) It's not America.
I'm sure there's more. We'll see how this Friday goes. |

Crossing the Bosphorus as the sun sets.
being made to feel welcome by nearly all people.
the cheapness and quality of the food.
film festivals / art festivals / music festivals.........
the sense of humour of Turks which is always laughing with you, not at you. |

I have more. I'm cranky today, but trying to be positive...
1) Whenever someone is parallel parking, 3 guys appear out of nowhere to wave their arms and shout 'gel! gel! gel! gel!'
2) Wasn't that a fantastic thunderstorm we had last night? Wish it'd been a little earlier so I could have enjoyed it more...
3) Students bring cake.
4) People plant corn around trees on the street. It never grows well, but people plant corn wherever there's room for corn. Apparently there's always room for corn.
5) Boza, and the boza song on dead winter nights... |

There is a skill involved though. You have to ring about an hour before you think you will run out, as it takes eons to arrive. there is nothing worse than a group of people sitting around-beerless when they know there is some on the way.
'he's been ages''
'20 minutes, what's he doing?'
jeez, he's been ages'
'I know 21 minutes at least'
'Is he brewing it himself.'
'How long has been now'
etc
But when he arrives

They're all waiting for you to crack open the malt, though. |

I can't emphasize the need to call in advance. Oh yeah it is a good idea to place the order yourself and accidently forget to ask for coke. Avoids potential tension. |

in no particular order:
1) the food & drink and the way of eating & drinking. Taking hours over your drink having chat with your friends, not getting leggless, yet still sing songs.
2) the warm people, who can go over the top but still show you true love and support when you need it.
3) the right to shop when you want as you want. No stupit trading hour laws.
4) crossing the Bosphorus at the sun set during the winter as the snow falls from skdar to Beşiktaş.
5) snow days off. You get to stay home and have fun in the snow. |
