Well, I'm pretty happy with Mexico. The money isn't as good as Asia, but the social life is much more interesting. You may want to look at a city in Mexico or another Latin American country. |

Really, it depends on what you want to do. Sports and hobbies? Exploring the countryside? Shopping? Bars and clubs?
It also depends on your attitude. I`ve had a happy social life, with hobbies, friends (locals and expats), exploring the area, etc., pretty much everywhere I`ve been, mainly because Ive had a positive outlook and have gone out and found things to do. Fun and friends can be found anywhere, if you put in the time to find them.

Istanbul has a lovely and varied expat/social scene, with both Turks and teachers mingling happily. |

I was in Shanghai for 3 years. It probably has what you're looking for.
Hong Kong too, though its pretty competitive job wise. |

Lively expat scenes are in all the large asian cities.. small expat communities can be found in all the small asian cities as well. Either way, you'll know it well wherever you go.
I live in Seoul.. and its extremely large and inter-connected.. constantly meeting new people and realizing the connections of they know this person, on and on.
But everywhere I've been in Asia (and been to most of it).. its the same thing.. wherever you go.. whatever city.
As a general rule, the larger the asian city, the larger and more lively the expat scene. |

Maybe, but not necessarily. There are some expats who, in an attempt to fully immerse themselves, shun other expats. More foreigners does not necessarily equal more foreign friends.
I had a very active social life in a small rice farming town in Japan!

If I wanted to socialise with people from my own culture I would stay at home. |

Just answer the question, folks.
Look at Suzhou and Hangzhou: lots to like there. |

It`s impossible to "just answer the question" in a meaningful way. We all have our own preferences. You`ve listed two places. OK, so you happen to like them. Could you explain why? And can you be sure that the OP will like them too? If all he wants is a list of cities, I`d recommend Nakajo, Japan. It`s a small town, but when I was there there were more parties and events than I could count. Never a dull moment!

Note that the OP has still not defined what "lively expat scene" means to him/her. Dancing? Clubbing? Familiar drugs? Promiscuous sexual relationships? Expat sports teams? Lots of cheap Western food? More Americans than other nationalities? |
