From a news item on the NET about a search party looking for a missing Baylor basketball player. They are using "cadaver dogs" to search the woods where he was last seen....First time I have ever heard this phrase.Do cadaver dogs need specail training like drug-sniffing dogs?

I think all dogs naturally have the skills to smell dead meat. Wouldn't take a lot more to make a cadaver dog. Now let's take a lot of wannabe ESL teachers, since they speak english they figure they can teach it. Now that amazes me.

You are right on the money. This is the old"Hey I don't need any qualifications to TEACH ENGLISH" argument...so convenient for those who are too lazy, indifferent, etc to get any qualifications(yeah,I know,we have discussed this one before) And PT,I have even met a few English "teachers" who do not even speak English so well....

Recently, I went with a friend to visit her sister who was almost completely deaf. She had a "hearing dog" that barked and would come to get her whenever the phone rang or if someone rang the doorbell.

When I went to check out this post, cadaver dogs, the image of 2 large dead dogs on the back of a bicycle came to mind, its one of those images I don't want in my head.
Why are you fighting?

Woza (up)

I think Bnix was trying to point out how rich the English language is and how serendipitiously it grows. They are looking for cadavers with dogs, now we have a new term in English--cadaver dogs.

As for fighting, I'm with Anthony: Cry Havoc! and let slip the dogs of war.

Laughing
You guys!!!

I saw the title and thought "Why are they talking about dead dogs?"

I can just imagine the sales pitch:

"What's the matter, kid? ESL career not working out? Why not try veterinary medicine?!?"

Hmm.. I thought it might have dietary implications - on the lines of 'have any of you impecunious types ever eaten road-kill'..

Sue--I was teaching english to a korean girl using a picture book. I pointed to a chicken and said the word and yum-yum. Then the korean kirl pointed to a puppy. I said the word then she repeated puppy and yum yum. At first I didn't get it, so I started pointing at my mouth. Then she pointed at her mouth. I thought it was a joke. Then her mom came over to see what we were up to cause I was laughing so much (so was the girl, Borum). She took the girl in the other room and when she came back it was clear Borum had been told not to say that. I guess from this that dogs are eaten in Korea, but I'm not sure. They eat snakes and iguanas here, but Fido is off the menu.

Actually, dogs are eaten in Korea.

One of my former TESL classmates is Korean. He told us a bit about it...Eventually we started cracking jokes. That desensitized us a bit. Kinda took the ick-factor out of the whole idea. Wink Before too long, it was accepted as a fact.

Dear Panama Teacher,
" I would eat dogmeat if I had to . . . "
Why not? In this field, you may occasionally be required to eat even more unpalatable substances on the job.
But getting back to eating creatures ( rather than waste products ), how about humans? Would you eat one ( a dead one, recently so, I might add ) if you had to to survive? I'm pretty sure I would, although I hope I wouldn't acquire a taste for it.

John--Unfortunately, I have been forced to eat human waste many times in my life (figuratively); never acquired a taste for it, though. I supposed that I would eat human meat out of need, if it was either that or die. Answer this, Cannibal John, would you hunt your prey (a la Hannibal) or would it need to be served up to you. Eating isn't too repulsive. It's hunting, butchering and cooking up that seem most disgusting.
