Are EF really THAT bad in Jakarta? I'm hearing some really bad reports on them through the grapevine...
Pray do tell all you insiders....

Just stay clear of Swara Group. Some seem to be run by some lovely people and have happy staff. Others are not. Always, always talk to the staff to get the low down. I had a full room of teachers once tell me that working at their school was hell and they'd leave if they weren't waiting for their airfare back. |

i had worked for a few different EFs in my time here and i have never had a bad experience. each school is different ( dah) so learn as much about it before you decide to work there............... but i really don't think that most EFs are as bad as most people make them out to be....most EFs....not all |

In a nutshell:
Work for EF and do more hours for less money than any other school - this is the same with all EF schools. Some schools are better than others & some will treat you better than others BUT the fact remains the same, MORE work LESS pay.
But if you are starting out with no experience and/or qualifications it's a way to get started. Everyone has to start at the bottom, and the bottom is EF. |

Ha ha! Both remarks are absolutely correct!
EF are franchises, so conditions vary from owner to owner. Some schools are great and some are terrible; most are somewhere in the middle. |

Thanks to all of you who replied. I get the feeling it's a bit of a tricky playing field to navigate round the duff schools. And there seems to be a hell of a lot of them out there in Jakarta.
Any more info will still be gladly appreciated...

I've been out of the game a few years - can you tell me what the difference is between EF and EF Swara? Is there a difference or have they just decided to tack another name onto the end of the standard EF? I used to be at EF Semarang ('9 .

Good to hear that. Perhaps you can explain why ex-Makassar employees I have come across invariably say the academic side is well-run but the housing is awful - with no a/c? |

And why 'annual' leave can only be taken at the END of the contract

Apologies to all, as I neglected to mention in my initial post that it would be a one-off, with subsequent communication being on a one-to-one basis. Please send me an email and I'll be happy to answer any questions you have.
Hope to hear from you soon.

...so if anyone has time to email this guy and find out whether or not there is a/c in the teachers' bedrooms and whether or not his staff can take annual leave throughout the year would they please post the results back here in the interests of transparency? I do like a bit of glasnost. |

I have had no email responses yet. However, I have taken note of points raised (AC, in contract holiday, total holiday etc).
Several assertions I have seen so far regarding these issues are ill-informed and plain incorrect, especially Team Papua's last comment.
I have ready detailed clarifications for anyone who writes to me.
No school is a perfect place in every respect, including ours. My point is that I have been up front and gone out of my way to respond honestly to criticism. All I ask is that those who criiticise "put up ..."- go out of their way to contact me and find out where they have been mis-informed or where their info is out of date.
Subsequent to that, should the recipient wish to paste up my reply onto a public noticeboard then this would be up to them.
Best wishes,
Andy |
