|
|
Hi All,
I've just about landed a job (not ESL) in Qatar and had a few questions..
My employer will pay for accommodation and transport, so what would you estimate the cost of living per month taking into consideration I don't live 'large' when overseas. Big hotels bore me, I much prefer to eat local.
I imagine the only thing that would burn my money is diving and other sports.
Also, I'm coming over as a single guy, but don't wish to live like a monk 'every night' I can't imagine dating a local, but is there much of a dating scene there with other western (or non-western) expats.
Cheers,
Kelps.. |

Cost of living per month...Let's see...next to nothing. Food here is pretty cheap, even if you do dine out. Gas here is beyond cheap, I can't see your weekly expenses being much over a couple hundred QR. If you go to the bars thats were it gets a little expensive since the cost of a beer is about 20 QR or more.
As for dating, It depends on how old you are. Speaking as a 25 year old I think I have a better chance of finding a date in the middle of Antartica then I do here. But as a man you should be ok, there's lots of Thai and Phillipino girls looking for a date. If I was a 50 year old divorcee, than my chances here are great.
But what do I know, I've only been here two months, you might want to talk to someone who's been here longer. |

Interesting observation. Why do you think it's easier for older guys? |

I've just noticed that there doesn't seem to be too many Westerners here in their twenties or thirties and those that are seem to come with a significant other. On the other hand I've noticed that there are more people in their 40's and 50's that come here, and some of them are divorced. I went to Paloma's last night and there were a lot of older people but not too many people in my age range... Granted for ladies night there were an awful lot of men...and somehow I still couldn't get a date! |

These are just my observations though, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to the right places. From what I hear I really need to go to the Rugby club. |

yip that sounds right. flies to sh*t springs to mind.
I always found the best thing about ladies night was to get a friend's wife to go to the bar on your behalf and get your drinks half price But then I am Scottish. |

Well, that explains a lot of my questions about you... You and Scot47 and your one-liners... (more fodder for that novel)
But I can see Rin's point BD. Most of the single women that I worked with over the years were my age or older... Easily the mothers of those 25 year olds.
Though I had the impression from some people here that Qatar has a younger set these days. Perhaps you just haven't figured out where to find them, RIN.

So... trying flattery... exactly right. I retired at 18.
Now, where is Qatarchic to fill us in on the hotspots of Doha?

Maybe I should quit teaching English and start a dating service for ex-pats in Qatar. I'm getting to the point that I might have to use the proposals section of the Gulf Times...
"25 year old Canadian girl looking for man for good times and possible relationship. Likes long walks on the beach, hockey and beer. Please call I'm sooo bored!"
Ok, maybe I'm not quite there yet, but still the dating service is sounding like a good idea. |

There are quite a few young people nowadays, some work for the international schools, others for places like QP, QAC.....
Hummm...hotspots in Doha? Well; of course the rugby club seems to be the place to go, sailing club, the hotels...actually most people seem to meet on compounds or through friends of friends- or in the most unusual of places- I met someone in carrefour once! |

I think it's more the kind of guy I want, and unfortunately I feel weird dating anyone over 35. I've hope we've answered your question here Kelpie. Really I think dating here is a matter of how eager you are to go out and meet people and what age your interested in dating. |

I knew someone who used to take the price stickers of goods, then approach the staff in Carrefour and ask for the price as his chat up line |

Desperation can lead to stranger situations than even that... |
