Last Sunday my boss told me/asked me, that I am now the director of the FTs. I am not sure what this entails and what are my duties and responsibilities. I have started to write up a job description for my company to look at, so there won't be any confusion down the track. Also we have to talk about money, how much extra should I ask for? I would welcome any advice from people who are in a similar position.
Cheers Carol

How about an assistant?
Chinese have a great way of dividing the troops! Appoint one who's unseasoned to a position of power! Best thing you can do is share the wealth. Tell him you need an assistant and don't take a raise. If he offered you even 500 more a month share it with your fellow FEs.

YEah Carol, your job is most likely to be a fecal spatter guard and blame deflector for your boss when it hits the fan. Getting a job description is a good idea, but the chances of your boss actually respecting the authority he delegates to you... hmmm...

Depends on him, really. Good luck. As for money, I'd say (extra work) x (hourly rate) x (1.5).

As hinted by someone before, you might be being taken for a ride.
At least, you are more of a figurehead than a genuine 'director'.

Otherwise: who had this position before? Why has that person left (or been made to leave)?

What kind of employer do you have?

In what capacity do they hire you vis-a-vis the authorities?

In all probability, you are a teacher at a private mill, and your boss is tired of dealing with foreigners and things foreign; you will in future have to do a lot of the less attractive chores such as hiring and firing, mediating and so on!

If it is a very bad outfit, you are going to spend twice as much time at office than you currently are - hopefully at a proportionately raised salary!

Actually my boss is very decent. In one way I look forward to having some sort of say in how things are done. I have put together a very extensive resource library. I have just come back from Aussie with a suitcase packed full of different teaching materials which I will make available to the other teachers.
I know there is a lot of bitching and moaning about different companies but I have no complaints about this one at all.
Roger, the last director was told to leave because he was useless and the FTs thought he was a right wanker including me. Actually after a big meal at the restaurant and many beers later I confided this to him, I don't think he ever forgave me. Why the boss didn't get rid of him sooner was a puzzle to us all.
I am not a power tripper, I have been a boss before and if anything I was too soft.
Cheers Carol

Probably not, but you have to admit it's a superlative snap. Just a little reminder that Cambodia is always simmering. (It's the anti-Thai riot in Phnom Penh, Feb 2003).

These DOS jobs or Teacher manager jobs are for the really dedicated !!

I was the logical choice to do the TM job where I am but who needs it - heaps more responsibility and heaps more STRESS!! As a candidate for the position I had the long experience as a teacher, the post graduate qualifications in ESL, the knowledge of the college courses where I am, the respect and favour of both the Chinese students and the Chinese teachers ......

BUT.....

I told our boss that a new teacher, who, at the time had no teaching qualifications, would be perfect - she got the position and is taking her newly found enhanced status really well - very responsible and very hard working.

I've got enough dealing with 2 littlies here in the land of the one child family to do me thanks! I just enjoy teaching and not all the political
crap that goes on behind the scenes thanks!

congratulations to you anyway Woza Carol!

I'd rather be 'strange" by WOOZIE's standards than POMPOUS and BORING (don't you feel for his sleeping little students?) Wink

No mistakes there....only yours!

You're simply 'in drag', talking to yourself most times

My students never sleep - cant see where there's any relevance! Laughing
....I make sure of that

and while you're at it .....why dont you pull down the 'lest we forget' 911 pic.

you're beginning to get on my nerve endings .........dengxing!
