Hi,
Is the best way to find a job in Taiwan to go to Taiwan on a tourist visa and work it out from there? Or does anyone have any good school they can recommend?

You need to be in Taiwan to find a decent job. It is the most risk free approach and ensures a higher wage. |

Hey Aristotle -
Ever consider being an agent? You seem to know quite a bit about Taiwan and the best ways English-teacher-wannabes like me can find work...
I mean, I wouldn't be giving out all this advice for free if I could paid to do it... although I suppose any warnings would be free... giving out lists of Don't's is like an international pasttime... |

Go with an agent. Coming over and looking when you get there is a waste of time. You will end up wandering around Taipei, doing demos, and you will miss out on 99% of the really good deals available on the island. Get a good agent to search out a live wire school for you and then go work there. You will make more money and be happier than slaving away for substandard wages at some McBushiban in Taipei. |
Did you go through an agent? If so which one? |

I whole-heartedly disagree with the "use an agent" advice...my advice...Don't! |

I'm with Aristotle and Pop_Fly on this one...don't go through a recruiter. Recruiters (agents) have a tendency to 'exaggerate' things (they get paid for every teacher they bring over, don't forget). There are plenty of good jobs to be found after you arrive in Taiwan. Take your time and consider several offers before jumping in. Never take the first offer. |

The "plenty of good jobs to be found" after you come over will be in schools that have contacted agents to find them teachers. It's six of one, half dozen of another. It's just a choice of what you like doing. You're very unlikely to find a school that has never heard of using, or used, an agent to find a teacher. Most of them have done it at one time or another, and many are currently wait listed in the chance that a teacher may be found for them. |
Being in Taiwan gives you the opportunity to visit the schools, talk with the directors, teachers, etc....give you a feel for what the job entails. A recruiter will gloss over important details and outright lie sometimes. When you arrive and discover the truth about the school and your conditions of employment (and possibly your residence -- I was lied to - not once, but twice - about accommodations), you will have no recourse. By then you've signed a contract and the recruiter has washed his/her hands of you.
As I have said, I was not told the truth about the conditions of my housing and my employment by two different recruiters (one for Korea, one for Taiwan)...I will never trust one again. If newbies want to take that chance then by all means, go for it. Just don't say you weren't warned. |

recruiters are not agents and agents are not recruiters. there sis a difference, although some may provide both services. |

For those of you who recommended using a recruiter or agent, can you recommend a tried and tested one. I've also been lied to by recruiters about jobs in Korea so I'm a little hesitant to go that way but if someone has used one and found them to be credible please let me know, here or by PM.
Thanks |
