After speaking to colleagues and following up with a search, I have gleaned that HCT currently offers raises up to a maximum of 4% per year.

What is the current cap amount after which teachers will no longer receive raises? Is the cap the same amount for people teaching in all departments?

That's kept in confindence by HR. But, I can assure that it's generous...from what I hear, more for content teachers.

With the latest increase, it should be about Dhs.21000.00

When you reach the maximum salary level, you no longer get the 4% (or whatever the amount may be), you are given a lump sum payment. That way your gratuity does not get increased as it is based on your maximum salary not including that lump sum.

Are these numbers only at HCT? I have a friend in another university who says new teachers are starting at about 20,000. This is English, not content. So then the salary scale varies greatly from school to school?

Which is why I'm not naming names. I'm not there, so this is second hand info. If someone at a uni other than HCT wants to comment, I'd really appriciate it. If no one does, well, I guess we'll all just have to wonder if it's true or not.

I just received a PM from someone else that doesn't want to post either as he is employed at what is likely the place in question. These are teachers who are arriving with many many years of Gulf experience - 10 to 15+ in most cases.

It was the word 'new' that was misleading. They are new to the employer, but not new to teaching or the Gulf.

Just don't want new graduates to think they can get this. Laughing

Does the figure circa 20,000 include housing or other allowances? What is the HCT policy on this? Free furnished, unfurnished or DIY?

The salary is stated separately from housing, ticket, medical and education allowances - so, technically- a teacher with a lot of experience and good qualification might be paid 20,000 ++++ the other allowances on top of that.

Hey WTTW.

Accomodations are paid for by HCT, or if you have been with HCT over a year you can opt out of their housing program and find your own housing and get a rent subsidy. Of course with the rising rents, many prople opted out who now really are hurting.

The villas/flats come unfurnished, but they usually have the big appliances (fridge, AC, clothes washer, burners).

You will also get a housing allowance that is given to you within the first few days in the UAE that is currently 30,000 AED to get furniture. It is a loan that is forgiven at 1/3 of the value per year you work. so when you finish your first full contract, the housing allowance is no longer owed, and you could look at it as a bonus.

Thanks both of you for the replies.Based on that info I'd have to say that the HCT offer just about the best remuneration & benefits package for EFL in the Gulf - outside of BAe KSA.

I agree. HCT does NOT offer the best package. The Petroleum Institute, for example, offered a starting salary of Dh.15,000 years ago and I know they still offer a furniture allowance of Dh. 42,000 cash, amortized at the same rate as HCT's. I don't know how housing works out these days but in 2002-2004 my housing allowance for a family of three resulted in our staying in a 2,000 sq ft (181 sq m) three-bedroom luxury flat. We furnished our place quite sumptuously for Dh.20,000, by the way (well--technically one of the bedrooms ws a bit spare) and so we got to keep the remaining Dh. 22,000. Our living room was so large that we had to buy two nice living room sets.
