|
|
Dear all,
I am looking into applying for an M.A. in TESL or Applied Linguistics (at a Canadian or US university, preferably) and, since I am currently working, I need to find a reputable online program.
I have searched on google and dave's but all the information I've come across is either outdated or unreliable.
Any advice?
Thank you in advance.

In Canada, there are distance (the term 'on-line' has negative connotations and isn't even factually correct since most programs involve reading textbooks etc as well as on-line materials) programs at Trinity Western (in BC) and the MA Educational studies (TESOL) Providence Theological Seminary (in Manitoba). Both are "Christian" schools and you learn to do everything through that lens.
Most Canadians who do distance degrees in TESOL or Applied Linguistics (and want to avoid having a degree from a Christian denominational school) do them through universities in the UK or Australia. |

Interesting options, although I don't know how well a degree from a denominational university would fare in the middle east. |

Exactly. That's why Canadians usually go to other Commonwealth countries (that, and degrees from other English inner circle Commonwealth countries area accepted in Canada, but ones from the US aren't always). |

University of Massachusetts has such a program: http://www.umassonline.net/degrees/Online-Degree-Master-Applied-Linguistics.cfm. |

Chancellor,
The UMass MA seems like a really good program. Did you do it? Or do you know of someone who has completed this degree?

No to both questions. However, UMass has a fairly decent reputation among government-run universities. |

Follow the link in my profile to find an online program with some of the top names in the business and a coupon for a small discount on the application... |

Some of the British unis offer very reputable distance MAs, which are recognised in the US, Canada, and the Middle East.
University of Birmingham (England, obviously) Surrey, Leicester, and Edinburgh are all very solid programs. |

This is the unfortunate part of Trinity Western. It's an excellent MA program (one of the best in Canada, IMO), but also requires some missionary-focused coursework which you certainly wouldn't want on your resume if you plan on going to the Middle East.
Oh, and you have to sign a contract saying you won't have sex if you aren't married, and that you won't look at porn or drink alcohol. YIKES. Yeah, a lot of ESL/EFL teachers will be into that |

Any more American universities with online Applied Linguistics MAs, or TESOL programs with a lot of linguistics coursework (as opposed to a heavy emphasis on education)? I know about the UMass one but it seems so inflexible...students can't write a thesis, must take 9 credits each semester and can't do part time classes, can't take any classes on-campus, etc. |

University of Toronto's OISE has an online M.Ed program I think currently they have two streams: Curriculum & Something else and Teaching English as a Second Language (which is probably what you are interested in) |

A Masters in Education from OISE is like having a law degree from Harvard. Good choice! |

Could someone please share info on the costs involved, roughly, please?
Thanks in advance.

If you are Canadian and looking at Canadian schools, like 13-15k would be the cost. |
