Radom is generally seen as one of the few butt holes in Poland. 1 hours drive south of Warsaw it is a complete and utter misery. You get that feeling from just driving through it. Mind you, as you'll probably be the only native speaker there you'd probably do quite well.

I've not heard too much about Radom. They seem to have a McD's. Smile We stop in there on our way back and forth to Krakow when we go with our children, but of course, we don't go into the city.

He's right about probably not many native speakers. That means you could probably work as much as you wanted. you'd lack for native speaker friends, probably, but you might be surprised...maybe some ex pats live there.

Anyway, you'd have a great chance to learn the language if you have to hang around Poles all the time (assuming you are trying to learn Polish). I don't see it as all negative, but it would be tough to be alone, but it can be done.

Hello:

I lived in Radom years ago when I was in the Peace Corps there. I go back periodically to see people I am close to who still live there. It is not exactly the most asthetically pleasing place in the country (Koszsalin is probably close to it in that respect). It does boast 3 McDs and some great people but it is a generally depressed place. The great thing about it is it is a central jumping off point. Warsaw is a hour north, Krakow is 3 hours, and Lublin is 2 hours away. It is just Radom itself is not worth looking at that much.

Thanks for info. i have a better picture of the place now and will only accept a place there if nothing else is available.

Hate McDs anyway.

Yes. Probably best to give Radom a miss.

It's a good clue that a city is pretty damn sad when people list a McD's as one of its it's main attractions.

Hey:

Kielce is not much to look at either. Then again, when one lives there, how much thought do you really give to the beauty around you? I mean, how often do you really look at the mountains if you live in Denver? Confused

I would say you could do worse than Radom, Koszalin, or Kielce but I would be lying (from a "beautiful town" sort of way). That being said, Koszalin is not far from the Baltic Coast. Kielce is half way from Warsaw and Krakow, and Radom is a good jumping off point to other places.

The school and your staff and the friends you meet there will make or break the experience you will have. What is not going to help is the fine architecture of the buildings. Unfortunately, you will not know the answer to that question until you are leaving. Shocked

I liked the mountains by Denver. I have relatives there.

Ok, if you have a good employer, go for it. Radom and Kielce are the two places I didn`t hear good stuff about.

Well I'm off to Radom on Monday, to City College. Not worried if I am the only expat there from the UK, and I have lived in the US for years too. If anyone is there, would like some info. I will post when I get there.

My friend worked there and loved it because he was pretty much the only native speaker in town. It isn't a very attractive place

I was dating a chick from Radom over the winter/early spring, so I went up to Radom often.

Nothing special going on there for sure.I was told it isn't as bad as it used to be and they are trying to beautify the place a bit.

There is a nice levy there and a pretty ok centre, but all in all it's a typical provincial Polish city with lots of thick neck chaps roaming around complete with tracksuits and adidas trainers.

I guess it's possible to stick it out there for a year or so before moving on to greener pastures.

Let us know what happens with the school in Radom. I really don't visit downtown much (boy is that an understatement) and so the architecture of the town doesn't have a lot of effect on me. I have a family so I don't need a lot of other exciting things to do.

Mostly what will make or break your time there is whether or not you make any friends and if your employer is fair and your classes and students are great. The "surroundings are/should not be what makes it for you. Your students are. At least that is my philosophy.

As to Denver...lots of people get inspiration from looking out their windows. But the view in the south of Poland and the view of the front range in Boulder or Denver are quite different. Now, we drove through Austria this past August...now that's amazing scenery...Innsbruck! Wow.

Not going there for the scenery, but for the experience, as a teacher that is. Would prefer a smaller city, like Radom, than some of the major ones. But you are right, it is the students that make the experience worthwhile. And a bad school can depress you no matter what the students are like. So far though, the DOS has been very helpful.

I just wanted to ask how you like the place so far? I have not been back since 06 when I was there for a wedding? Exactly what parts might they be "beautifying?" Confused
