OK, so I couldn't stand it any longer. I blinked first. I called TATI. I asked when? They said we're not sure. We're waiting for The Ministry. I said some other stuff. They said call again next week. I said OK.
Was it something I said?
Anyone got the ETA on the Ibri C., et al? It's been three months since I set foot in a classroom and if I don't get my hands on a marker pen soon I won't be responsible for the consequences ... |

I have heard that the Ministry is nearly non-functional this Ramadhan. Many places are complaining that they can't get approvals for this and that from the MoE.
That could be part of the problem.

Just as long as it's the ministry and not TATI, I suppose I'm ok.
I'll just figure on getting flight confirmation a couple of days before the actual flight.

I just phoned TATI again for an update - still the same story about the Ministry not having given them any dates yet. But, disturbingly, the TATI rep also said that the Ministry might not in fact want some of the Oman teachers to start until January!
In light of this, would it be fair play to start applying for any other Oman jobs I see? |

I suspect that the problem will be the same for all of them... same Ministries... same set of colleges.

I too am waiting to hear from TATI, after being hired months ago. I didn't expect to be waiting indefinitely. I haven't heard anything since I was told the visa process had begun. That was several weeks ago, and I was also told at that time that I'd be departing for Oman in the second or third week of september. Here we are, the third week of September and no idea. Has there been any word of progress? |

The Eid is now over, I think... and people should be getting back to work which theoretically will get the wheels moving again.
I'd try giving them a call Sunday/Monday (it's now the weekend) and see if you can raise anyone.

I spoke to my TATI contact last week. She was friendly enough, but basically couldn't say anything until colleges start tomorrow (Sat 18th). Only then, she said, will colleges know their precise teacher requirements (i.e. confirmed student numbers c/w numbers of teachers having returned from last year as promised etc etc).
As an Oman newbie, I get the picture I'm in the slush pile waiting for a vacancy either at my chosen college or at another MoM college. It is indeed a nervous time but I'm pretty sure (esp. from the great advice of other posters) that the next few days will reveal all inc. maybe a flight to Oman t a day's notice.
HOWEVER, I do have a meeting arranged on Monday with my school from last year, just in case ...
We can only try to live up to your moniker, Dude: stay cool and abide |

Glad that you have a backup plan, but they may not know for another week or even two their final teacher needs. Students tend to trickle in. Ramadhan and Eid hitting this time of the year is very difficult for starting the year.
I think that you are right that you are in some kind of 'back-up' list for hires. Very nerve wracking...

Well, at least you've been able to get some kind of reply. My (several) emails seem to have gotten lost in the Ramadan shuffle. I'll give them a call tomorrow. The Dude is abiding, but not comfortably. Certain things have come to light, thanks to you. I assumed it was a done deal after signing the offer sheet, though I realize that's not an official contract. It never occurred to me that it was an offer to be on a waiting list. The Dude can abide as long as there is communication, man. Thanks for the info. |

Well, it looks like PierogiMonster's ExcellentIbriAdventure will have to stay on hold for a year: there's been no news at all from TATI since my accepting the job offer back in June.
I know an offer letter is not a contract but it does lead one to believe there's a job waiting, especially when they write things like:
" Technical College will reopen on 11th Sep 2010 and we will confirm you the ticket booking and joining date before that date".
Yes, I know things are done different in Oman than in, say, Poland, but it's just the lack of basic human courtesy in not saying e.g. sorry but we won't be needing as many teachers as we thought etc etc.
Gripe over: I've had my moan and am happily back on Plan B.

Been a crazy week for me, so haven't had a chance to post before now.
Just wanted to give you an update on Ibri and MoM........
It seems all new hires at MoM colleges have been put on hold, while they try and sort out the mess.
It seems all deans at MoM colleges have been rotated. That means the dean (acting) at Ibri is now gone. (I hear he was moved to Ibra - Could it get any worse in Ibra?)
The HoD has also been replaced at Ibri.
So it seems, IF they ever start hiring again, things may have improved in Ibri. MAYBE. Or as we say in Oman ..... Inshallah. |
