Does living and teaching EFL in Mexico or any other country help one get a job once he/she returns to their home country?? Are there any here who used to live in Mexico teaching EFL and have returned home?? If so how did EFL teaching and living abroad help you economically at home??
Just curious. Cool

We might not hear from anyone for this one. I've gone back years on some threads and have noticed that most who used to be here are now GONE.
High turn over rate.
Shocked

I haven't had the experience of returning from abroad to live, but I would imagine that among the benefits would be the acquisition of a second language, especially in the UK where it is so rare, and a realization that any problems, real or imagined, that your first-world country had would be put in perspective by your experiences in a less developed country.

I have a friend who lived and taught EFL in China for two years and then he returned to the States. He's working at Target. True story. Shocked

I had another friend who lived and taught EFL in S. Korea for almost ten years. His ability to speak fluent Korean didn't help HIM at all. He went to work for Walgreens. Shocked

I met 2 guys that taught English in Asia, one in Taiwan and another in the PRC and they were cleaning fish in Alaska on-board "slave" ships.

I also met another guy that spent soemthing like 20 years in the PRC and he was living in a cheap hostel, doing day-labor and riding a 2nd hand bike.

I have never met somebody that taught English in Mexico and went back home.

I guess I could use my fluency in Spanish to get a job as a manager at a fast-food joint.

O sea, he who succeeds uses the resources he has available to better advantage than he who doesn't succeed.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Phil K. I momentarily forgot that people who are in bad situations only have themselves to blame. Rolling Eyes

Very true. My back-up plan, if all else fails is this:

Use my ability to speak Spanish, my national food manager certification, and ability to lead and inspire people (all those hours spent in colegios) to land a career position at a national fast-food chain. Cool

Don't laugh Laughing , in 3 years you can be a general manager and make $40-60,000 a year depending on the location. Shocked

Wrong! Atlantic cod is better!

Real fish & chips, no. There are a few places that do fish with breadcrumbs and McDonalds-style fries, and call it fish and chips, but cod in beer batter and real potatoes, I haven't found yet. But, although we are going off message, that illustrates the previous point; with the desire to do it, starting a fish & chip shop in D.F. would almost certainly succeed, the true entrepreneur would be drawing up his business plan as I speak...

Prof. Gringo, the next time you're in Alaska and you meet those guys who are working on a slave ship and they used to teach EFL remind them of the above.
