If it's for the HCT, the malleability of the spine, also, comes to mind.
It's, like, if you don't bend over backwards, the little princes and princesses will have you thrown out on your ear! |

If you test positive for either drugs or alcohol during a medical check for visa purposes (or for any other purpose) - you will probably, at best, be put on the first plane out. If drugs are involved, probably arrest, jailtime followed by deportation. |

Yeah, drugs in the blood/urine is considered "possession" by UAE authorities.
It's an indication of bad judgement! |

Dear It's Scary,
"Yeah, drugs in the blood/urine is considered "possession" by UAE authorities."
But probably not "possession with intent to sell."

I got a contract for the ME that clearly states that if you test positive for AIDs or Hepatitis, you will be refused the job and asked to repay the airfare and the visa costs . So I'm guessing it's general disease free people they seek.
Good luck. |

Unless the test is conducted at a blood/plasma centre!
It's like, possession is nine-tenths of the law! |

All this makes the medical sound a little more scary than it is. They are checking, as has been said, for HIV, hepatitis, TB mainly but some employers may be wary of diabetes. Assuming you're clear of these you should be fine. Any medication you take regularly should come with doctor's notes etc. Anyone who takes a medical and alcohol shows up in their blood is foolish and probably doesn't deserve a job in the middle east. A couple of clean days before a test should see you OK. The only 'sticky' which can catch you out is any medication containing codeine. Go and celebrate after the test is clear! In the UK there is a particular headache pill called 'solpadeine', which is non-prescription and therefore can be bought over the counter. This contains codeine and is one to avoid. Codeine in your system is a no-no. |

IR - a doctor's note or scrip is not necessarily going to put a person in the clear if detected - codeine is considered a narcotic. Poppy seeds are an illegal substance - check the MoH's website for the list - it is extensive and gives particulars as to what is and what is not permitted either on or in the person. |

HIV
TB
Hepatitis (B? I think so)
visual test for something that shows up on the skin (they looked at our hands and torsos - surely it wasn't for leprosy!)
for women: pregnancy (simple question of Is there any chance you could be pregnant?)
There was no pee test or blood drawn. At least not that I've heard of. I did this process in August 2011. |

How can they do an AIDS test without drawing blood? They certainly drew mine back in the 90s. At that time all medical tests were done within the country - blood draw and x-ray.

Fair point, VS. Maybe I've forgotten..........
You're right. They drew 2 vials of blood. (Had to ask a friend who was less jetlagged at the time and has better recall of that week.) |
