I am thinking about accepting a position in Puebla. Could anyone give me an idea of the rent on a one-bedroom apartment? I tried looking through the other posts, but all I could find was outdated.
Thanks |

I'm also considering Puebla in a year or so from now. Brown, let me know how it goes. It looks like a beautiful city and it never gets hot which is something I dont like about a lot of Mexico.
Thanks |

Are you sure you are not thinking about Cuernavaca? It gets hot in Puebla. I've been there when it was hot. Not humid, but hot. |

I'm sure you know more than I do. I was looking on Wikipedia climate for Puebla. It said the average highest temperature was 73 F. in April. Further reading said nights were a little cold year round. The glacier volcano nearby supports the evidence but again, I've only been to northern Mexico ( desert rattlesnake heaven) so I don't really know.
I'm looking for a place to live where I won't sweat. I don't do sweat.
Thanks for your observation. I'll take it seriously.

From what I have seen, it supposedly stays between 60-80F during the days, and cooler at night (duh). I will let you know. I may be down there by the end of next month. I believe that it's elevation keeps it much cooler than the northern parts of Mexico. I have spent some time in Texas, and it is hot as hell there! |

BBB, I see that cgage lists Memphis as his location, I think in his opinion of hot it would be true to say it never gets hot in Puebla!
The thing I don't like about Puebla is in my opinion it gets quite cold there.
I have some friends who live in Puebla, rents are all over the place, so are the quality of the places to rent. I'd budget for about 3000 pesos a month. You can pay a lot less, but then your transportation costs are going to go up. |

I was thinking between 2000 and 3000, so that is about right. Thanks for the info. I think it will be less humid in Puebla than the American south. I spent some time in Mississippi; I loved it there, but some days I could barely breath becuase of the humidity. Like 75F, but I am sweating nonstop. People looking at me like I am about to have a heart attack lol |

73 isnt the average highest temperature, but the highest average temperature. This isn't just a picky difference of wording. What the average highest (monthly) temperature means is that the when the temperature is averaged over all the days of April, over all the years that weather records have been kept, the result is 73. For the average to be 73 means the temperature is sometimes higher and sometimes lower. |

In Memphis. every day in August and sometimes part of July is over 100 degrees. And very humid. Every place and car has air conditioning. |

When BBB says it's hot in Puebla - I think she means relative to Mexico City. I spent the summer months in Puebla years ago and certainly didn't find it hot compared the coast in Veracruz, where I also spent a summer.
It's cooler than any place else that has been mentioned in this tread. I've also been there in winter and it was pretty cold at night. You certainly won't need air conditioning at night any time of the year.
If I were forced to pick just one place to work long term in Mexico, it would have to be Puebla . |

How do you plan on paying for this apartment? Teaching salaries in Puebla are VERY LOW. |

Do you know how low they are, EFLeducator? Some numbers could help the OP decide if looking for work in Puebla is a good idea. |

4,000 to 6,000 pesos according to my sources. That's BEFORE taxes and you'll be lucky to get paid on time. This from some current TEFLer's I know who used to teach in Puebla. And no, it wasn't ten years ago. VERY recent.
FAIR...& BALANCED. |

I know three teachers who live in Puebla.
One works at a German Colegio and gets about 15,000 a month.
One works at the ITESM Puebla campus and gets about 20,000 a month.
The other is a free lancer--who does a lot of work for textbook publishers, her salary varies, but she recently bought an apartment in a historic building so I think she's doing okay.
Of course all three are well qualified, MAs in the appropriate subjects (the first one has K-12 certification) several years experience and all three happen to Speak Spanish fluently as well. |
