We will beat Iceland comfortably, and even more comfortably France (assuming they get to the next round) because they won't park the bus. Don't forget, England is going to win this thing. |

I am English and proud. Why would I not say England was going to win? |

Honestly that is probably the worst England performance I've seen. Normally we get an easy qualifying group for a major tourney then scrape through groups and then get dumped as soon as we face quality opposition. We haven't even faced that today.
I honestly haven't thought we could beat anyone decent since we had the 2002 England team with Seaman Rio/Campbell Scholes Owen etc. running it. I even remember when we beat Argentina 1-0 comfortably then played Denmark in the last 16 and won comfortably. Then faced Brazil and it's the first and maybe last time I ever honestly thought it wasn't a surprise Owen scored.
Only other time I thought we had quality was Euro 96 and then World Cup 98. |

I think the writing was on the wall back in World Cup 2010 when England and the U.S. were in the same group and England finished second in the group.
I think it's hilarious that every major tournament that England is in, there is this huge expectation that they will perform well but then...
I would agree:

They really haven't had it for some time now.

Thank you johnslat, and you obviously understand national pride better than grahamb, judging by his crass comment above. |

Dear Phil_K,
Actually, I think grahamb's post may indicate how nationalism is very likely to engender conflict and aggression.
"Patriotism is fundamental to liberty because pride in one’s nation-state, and a willingness to defend it if necessary, is the basis of national independence. Patriotism is the courage of national self-determination.
By contrast, nationalism is patriotism transformed into a sentiment of superiority and aggression toward other countries. Nationalism is the poisonous idea that one’s country is superior to somebody else’s. Nationalism is intrinsically a cause of war and imperialism."

I consider you a patriot.
Regards,
John |

You predicted an easy England victory, but Iceland won. Swallow your pride. |

I'm glad you see me as a patriot by your definition, and I am. However, I am probably getting closer to your definition of "nationalism" than is comfortable for some people here. Personally, I don't really care about labels, I just love my country and am proud of it. |

You obviously didn't read this comment, or you don't understand it:

Yes, please note the Court of Henry VIII and the haughty demeanor of the French Aristocrats all the way up to the eve of the destruction of the Monarchy. |

What a Wonderful result for Wales! Let's hope they can beat Portugal and that get into the final. I think that's the best I have ever seen Wales play in a game. They did get away with one or two decisions but thoroughly deserved their victory. Such a shame Ramsey won't be in the semi-final. |
