Does anyone know if a double standard exist among South American girls? Someone on this forum once wrote that South American women are less concerned in giving it up to foreigners than locals because they thought that the Latino men expected them to be virgins and it would ruin their reputation if they had sex too easily with a local man. On the other hand they felt that foreign men did not expect them to be good girls. Any truth to this?
P.S. I have no opinion on this. I just wanted to see what other people thought. |

From what friends have told me, once you are "quemada" (burned) you are not very desirable in the marriage marketplace. Doesn't matter with whom you did the deed.
I should qualify that by saying that the above is the case in towns in the provinces. It may be different in Mexico City or other large cities. |

OK, so I asked my students. Keep in mind that my students are mostly a mixture from Merida and from villages here in the state of Yucatan. Most are between the ages of 18 and 24, but there are younger students (15-17) and older students mixed in, too. When I asked, "How many men and women do you know who were virgins on their wedding day?" the consensus was about 2%. When I asked, "Of those same people you know, how many had more than one sexual partner prior to marriage?" they couldn't come to an agreement. Most said they thought the women they knew probably had maybe one or two, while the men, if they could be believed, had more than that. They said "decent" single women don't sleep around, but that most women do have sex with long-time steady boyfriends that they plan to marry. When I asked, "What about the guys? Do they only have sex with someone they plan to marry?" they all rolled their eyes and laughed like Ya, right! What a dumb question! |

My point was not that it mattered with whom you did the deed. The thing is that if you have sex with a foreigner the story is probably less likely to get around. If you have sex with your local boyfriend probably every guy in the village will know. This is how I viewed it. Don't know if that is true but sometimes people act certain ways because of perception as opposed to reality. |

So how can the men sleep around when girls only sleep with men they plan to marry (who are the guys having sex with then (prostitutes?)? Are the girls trying to say that most of the men have sex with a few bad girls? |

Gotta wonder about those self-reported stats....
OK, so you got women who supposedly only sleep with the guy they intend to marry, but guys who will sleep with any willing female ... supposedly. Who the heck are these guys sleeping with?
Ill believe that in general (and very general), guys will sleep with more women than women with guys. (true in the States too) but that still leaves an interesting imbalance. |

I've mentioned this somewhere before:
Almost all of my male Ecuadorian friends wanted their wives to be virgins. BUT, all of these guys were always on the hunt for a girl to sleep with...trying to explain to them that this doesn't a) add up, or b) make any kind of sense, was akin to a bit of head, banging and brick wall action.
Here in Argentina (at least in Buenos Aires and Mendoza and i assume for any large city) it's pretty much expected that boys and girls sleep together whether they're in a relationship or not. In fact, going out at the weekend in Buenos Aires reminds me of being at university-absolutely everyone on the pull. Quite entertaining to watch actually, thank god i don't have to get involved with all that anymore (although i look back fondly on the days when i was all alone, when i seriously think about it, it was rubbish!!) |

Maybe it just means that some women are getting a lot more than their fair share. |

This may be over the line, but another trend I've noticed, aside from the who/how many question, is a question of what people actually get up to.
Several Ecuadorian (male) friends have told me that there are certain things (intentionally left vague to maintain "g" rating) that they enjoy, but would only ever expect from a "loose woman." Things no "decent woman" would do, and no "decent man" would expect from his wife or serious girlfriend. Things that, in fact, to me, seem like a fairly normal part of a normal relationship. Anyone else run into this?

I think that Justin is making reference to something that can be summed in a line from a crappy film, 'Analyse This!' when robert de niro is caught in bed with his lover and says something along the lines of:
'Of course i have a lover. You think i'd let my wife do this? Those lips kiss my children!'
I think this applies to men of all cultures though..if a lady does something 'interesting' in la cama men often think: 'Hang on, where the hell did she learn that? Must have a lot of "practice" ' It's a male thing, always wanting to be the 'experienced' or dominant party. Not me though, i (and most of my European friends, but not most of my Latino friends) exited the dark ages some time ago!! |

Maybe certain men are getting more than their fair share of the pie. Maybe there is a great desparity between how many partners men have had (some guys almost none and some guys many). |

Ive also heard of the DeNiro thing about oral sex and an ex-boyfriend of mine here told me that lots of guys feel that way about the mother of their children. Now, I have no intention of becoming the mother of anyone else's children so I guess thats why Ive met any guys personally with a hang up about that. Although I did meet a guy who didnt even want to hug a woman if he thought it was "her time of the month" But then, he was a bit whacked.
By the way, www.latinforos.com has some interesting forums dealing with sex. Ive read a few curious things in there. |

I'm surprised that no one has said the obvious yet: the guys in these cases are liars. In North America there's the 3:1 rule where if a guy says he's slept with 9 women then in fact he's probably only slept with 3 or less. It's not an accurate rule by any means but the point is that us guys tend to exaggerate about our experiences due to the whole being manly, macho and wanting to appear cool in front of our friends thing. It's incredibly silly but the attitude does go away as we get older.
I'll also add (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) that Ecuador seems to have a prevalent presence of prostitution. I once read an older report that said nearly 30% of males in Ecuador had their first sexual encounter with a prostitute and when you combine that with the aforementioned points, there emerges the idea that guys are counting visits with prostitutes to be sexual encounters (and this would be accurate) and also exaggerating the numbers. Now the women (and maybe other guys) aren't assuming that the guys are increasing their "stats" thanks to weekly visits to the brothel and so it gives the impression that men are fooling around with a lot of the regular women instead even when the women say otherwise, hence possibly explaining the imbalance in numbers. |
